New HG 22RE Still Blowing White Smoke
So I have 94 pickup with a 22RE I spent way too long replacing my head gasket the past few weeks. Got the head resurfaced and scrubbed on the block to clean it up for hours. Finally got it all bolted back together...Picked the rags I forgot to pull out of the cylinders through the spark plug holes and started her up and she's still blowing some white smoke.
I've run it a bit and actually had to drive it for about an hour yesterday and checked the coolant today and it didn't seem like any was gone (radiator was full to the top with a little extra in the overflow tank). Could anything else be causing the white smoke? or is my HG blown already? It's been 50's and rainy here for the past few days could the damp cool weather be contributing? I'm at a loss....

sounds like compression and cylinder leakage testing time to me! Also, check the color and quality of your oil. If its turned to chocolate milk, you're still getting water in the oil.

Thanks for the replies guys. Running it was what I was thinking too...I got a line on a running motor with 150,000 miles for $300 so i'm kinda figuring that I'll just keep running this and see how it goes...if it blows up I'll get that motor and swap the hole thing...though i'd rather not do all that work.
I'm glad that some of you guys got a good laugh out of my mishap with the rags....I got the engine all back together and turned the key...half a crank and she just wouldn't move.... I started freaking out checking everything afraid I was crunching my valves or something like that...Turned it by hand and it would just stop when cylinders 2 and 3 got near the top of their stroke. Then all of the sudden it hit me Pulled the plugs and there the rags were.
It took an hour or two to get them out... I'd pull some of one through the plug hole with a pair of needle nose pliers... get as much as I could out...cut it/tear it with a pair of scissors... push it back in using a screwdriver and hammer when necessary (being very careful not to mess up the plug threads)...and repeat...
