I have a new downey header for my 86 4Runner and was wondering, once i remove the stock exhaust manifold and get ready to install the new header do i re-use the stock exhaust manifold bolts or do i need to buy new bolts, and if so were do i get them from ?.

no i wouldnt use the stock bolts! i would go down to a store like autozone or maybe a toyota dealership and buy them!! those bolts are 22 years old and have been heated up and colled down for that many years i would buy me some news ones!! good luck....

Without a doubt get yourself some new ones!!!! You should be able to get them from place where you got the headers from.

Honestly, I would call Downey and ask them WTF? They should have mentioned that. I would go ahead and get new studs and nuts from Downey. Did you get their header gasket too? I hope you did!!!

most of the stock manifold 'bolts' should actually be 'studs'.
you should only have a few bolts, in particular the PAIR manifold uses bolts.
EVERY other fastener through the exhaust should be a stud from the head, with a nut to hold the manifold on.

I think they are M10 x 1.25 30mm. However most are studs. Your toyota dealer should have the studs in stock for about the same price as metric hardware from the HW store.

My downey header didn't come with fasteners but did come with their exhaust manifold gasket. I'm pleased with my header and exhaust system from them. Combined with their huge cone filter on an otherwise stock drivetrain and stock tire size I've increased my MPG on the highway.

I was thinking of going with stage 8 fasteners, but they dont stock one specifically for the 3vze. They said if I gave them the size they could make some up for around $30 a set. The stage 8 are the ones advertized on power block that wont ever loosten.
Any one know the size of the studs for the downey headers. Mine came with bolts not studs.

I did finaly got my downey header installed last weekend, all of the nuts and bolts came off of the stock exhaust with out any problems. The downey header is a very good header, but there was a few miner problems with the header i had to fix, the first problem was the two small block off plates, the mounting holes do not line up with the mounting holes on the header, its easy to fix by drilling the holes out a little larger. The second problem wich isn`t really a problem, i didn`t like how sloppy that the welds were done where the pipes are welded to the mounting flange, so i used an air tool with a carbide gringing bit and cleaned up the welds quite a bit, i probably removed an 1/8'' of weld from each tube. other than those two miner things its a good quality header and i would recomend it to anyone looking for a header.

so did you use the bolts that came with the headers, or did you order the special studs with locking nuts?

No bolts came with the downey header, i just reused the stock hardware and everything bolted up just fine.

I threw out all the bolts in leiu of using studs in all bolt holes. I FUBR'd the threads in my old head torquing the exhuast bolts to spec. A little late response for your project but maybe will help the next guy.

Thorley= no grinding, good welds, 0 fittment issues (but damn their prices have gone up)

My stock manifold was held on with studs and nuts, i just removed the 6-8 nuts holding the stock manifold on and then slid the header on to the stock studs, put the nuts back on and tightened everything back down.
