The new Guy - first 4 runner (1994 v6 what to watch for)

Hey everyone,
I have been stalking the forums for about 2 years slowly collecting information and understanding on 4runners. I originally deployed to afghanistan and loved my hilux that I had over there! it had a 4cyl diesel and somewhere over 480k miles (ODO died) that thing was a beast and would not die! wheel fell off and had no spare but threw the tire in the opposite corner and had my passangers climb in the back and we made it home :p

any ways...

I found a 1994 4runner with 260k miles and the guy is tired of working on it. He replaced head gaskets and now it floods... most of the research i found is pointing to either a stuck cold start injector, bad timer, or vac lines wrong... Im comfortable with that... But my main question is, if you were looking at a 1994 4runner, what are the bad things to look for? any signs to look for that are a complete "RUN AWAY" sign? the body is clean and rust free... interior is well used but in tact. transmission is "strong" he says. he is asking 1100 so want to jump on it but want to know any words of wisdom if anyone has any...

Chris

Does it run and drive now? Many unknowns about buying a vehicle that you can't drive first. That price is high of it doesn't run.

Rust, head gaskets, and the auto transmission are what I'd be looking at most closely on any given '94.

- Check the rust particularly around the wheel openings in the quarter panels. Look very closely for bubbling paint or rust starting at the edge of the chrome trim.

- Head gasket is recently done, but who knows how well. If he did it himself, how much can you trust a mechanic who can't fix a flooding problem to have done a head gasket correctl?. Were the valves adjusted at the same time?

- You need to drive it to feel how the transmission is shifting.

- Also, when was the timing belt last changed?
