New Guy. Introduction and question

Hi all,

I'm Dave, and I've just picked up a '95 4Runner. I'm new to Toyota trucks (well trucks in general, really), but I've been a gear-head my whole life and am no stranger to turning wrenches. This is why I picked up a pretty clean 4Runner with a few issues - not the least of which is a blown head gasket. So, I'll be digging into that over the next couple of weeks, and hope to have her up and running well very soon. Here she is now:

Now, I have a couple of questions which I'm having trouble finding answers to... I'm sure the answers are out there, but I've looked and come up empty handed. So here goes.

1st: I've got a new water pump, thermostat, timing belt, idler, tensioner, and complete gasket set coming. Is there anything else that I'll be right next to and should replace while I'm in there?

2nd: There are two hoses in the picture below that are cut back and have bolts stuck in them. I think it's safe to assume that this is not the factory configuration. Where are they supposed to go?

Thanks in advance!

As for the first question. If you notice any oil leaking from the front seal, that might be another option.

It could be from your reed valve, but I'm not sure. Do you have cruise control? You've got a couple of lines that I don't have.

Either go to the power steering idle up valve or the a/c idle up valve

I do plan on doing all the front seals while I'm there. Seems like a good idea, I'll have the seals in the kit and I'll be right there.

I was just wondering if there's anything dumb that's under the plenum or something that should be replaced. I'm used to being in the 944 Turbo world, where you have to plan these projects out pretty well because if you need something small and dumb that you didn't plan for, you'll either have to wait a week for shipping from an online retailer or, on the off chance you can actually find it at a local parts store or :cough: dealership, it will cost you your soul.

But, I've actually gotten it mostly torn down now, and the only thing I didn't plan for is that fan idler bracket thingy.. $120 from RockAuto.com, kinda spendy, but, again, I've been conditioned by years of paying the P-Car-Tax such that, even though that thing was kinda expensive, the rest of the stuff seems so cheap to me that I'm not really worried about it.

The lines to the reed valve were still there. And yes, it has cruise.

The truck did have A/C originally, but it's been removed somewhere along the line. So maybe that's it. Do these things actually have separate idle up valves for the A/C and the power steering?

That they do, and it seems to work. Mine jumps up 100 RPM or so when I jack the wheel over.

I would replace the knock sensor and pigtail as well, and pcv valve, but other than that I sounds like a good list
