Hey fellas,
I am new to Toyotas (coming from Audis), and recently bought an '86 4Runner to use as a daily driver as well as my hunting truck. So far, I think it's great! I'm excited to put it to the test off-road. My grandfather always used to say that those Toyotas will go ANYWHERE. I guess I'll find out

I used to drive my FIL's '85 Camry, which has a clutch fluid leak, and I'd have to refill the reservoir once every couple weeks. Well, this truck seems to have the same problem, except that I have to refill it twice a week! The fluid seems to be dripping down the left side footwell. I'm thinking that it's probably the clutch master cylinder, but these Toyota systems are all new to me!

Anybody have any ideas of where it might be leaking from? If it's the master cylinder, which part of it typically leaks? What's required to replace it?

If you need to replace the master cylinder, just get one from Marlin Crawler. I think i might end up having to get a slave cylinder as mine doesn't seem to push the clutch quite far enough.

yeah sounds like your clutch master cylinder, get the part and fix it and your good to go!

So I assume you just unclip the MC from the clutch pedal in the cab, then unbolt the MC from the firewall under the hood and slide it out? Is there some trick I should know about?

Well, you'll have to bleed it to get the air out . If ya didn't know .After you replace it .

The clutch master cylinder usually leaks inside the car onto the carpet. that's why you don't ever see any fluid. Feel around the floorboard carpet under your clutch pedal and I'll bet you'll find your leak.

Thank you. Indeed that is where the fluid is leaking out onto. I'm just wondering which part of the MC usually develops a leak?

The front seal is the part that leaks - between the body and the pushrod (non-pressure side). It's a wear item, nobody's fault. Other than adding that it must be bled out, it's exactly as you described. Nothing hard about it.

it's recommended to get a new one, not rebuilt or remanufactured.
