Here's the carnage of trying to nurse a bad wheel bearing home 2 miles at 5mph.

Gouge worn in wheel hub. (already pressed in new bearing races)



Spindle destroyed.



Aisin hub destroyed.



Got so hot it burnt the paint off.



That's not grease mushed around the inside of the hub, that's what's left of the hub gear.



And the best for last... A destroyed 1.5 month old 30 spline longfield.




Just repacked the bearings when I put the longs in less than 2 months ago and they looked fine then, sweeeettt.
I've had wheel bearings go before and I've always had plenty of warning. This gave me pretty much no warning and left me 2 miles from home in the middle of the night. Driving along 45mph and suddenly the truck jerks over to the left like the brake caught. Only lasted a half a second then felt fine so I figured I'd make it home. Nope, started grinding about 5 minutes later so I started my 5 mph, pull over and dump water on the hub every 5 minutes journey the rest of the way home.

Cost me a solid axle spindle, bearings, manual hub, longfield. None of which I have spares of. Swell!

Wow, that's insane! Sorry about that. Did you go wheelin recently and forget to lube the bearings after deep water, or just a random fluke? I think I'll go home and make sure mine are good...

I'm thinking this was totally random. I am pretty good at keeping up on the front end considering the cost and time I put into the SAS. I'm thinking the spindle nut backed off totally. Don't re-use the locking tab more than a couple times I guess

That sucks Justin. I got a "damaged" chromoly birf on my shop table as a creative paperweight aka beating tool.

It makes for interesting conversation.

Guessing for whatever reason the spindle lock nuts backed off totally causing the end of the axle to rest all its weight on the manual hub gear while the caliper held my wheel on. Wouldn't take long to turn that metal to mush running down the road.

Yep I have a shiny new $300 hammer.

but that only cost me a spindle from junkyard $40 wheel bearings, i think $30 and i picked up an aisin hub for $10 ( i couldent get the other one off...stupid cone washers)

at least you still have threads on your spindle lol. ordered one of the $30 used spindles from front range off road.
