So I lost my engine a couple days ago due to a rod knock. The tech didn't even have to look at the truck long to figure it out, but he said I shot a rod through the block.

I need a new engine right? There's no saving this one or rebuilding? I found one but need your opinion on what it's worth. The details are that it's already been rebuilt, all new bearings, bored 20 over, new water and oil pump, new gaskets everywhere, fully adjusted to toyota specs. Comes with a practically new clutch pre installed. It's a drop in motor. I just have no idea what they are worth.

Can anyone here help me who has gone through this process before?

Yea if it sounded that bad its not worth saving, specially if the rod went thru the block.

Rebuilt engine like that are worth quite a bit, depends on your area but if its all recently redone and they have paperwork I wouldnt shy away from paying them 1500 or so.

Thanks CJM, I figured as much. I'm gonna pull this one and just visually inspect at least. What do you think I could sell a busted motor for, for parts or scrap metal? Is it even worth that.

Not knowing what engine you have hard to say what it might be worth for a rebuilt one.

Or the scrap value of yours .

It should be pretty easy to see a hole in the block

If you truly shot a rod through your block, you should be able to crawl under the truck with a flashlight and see that... shouldn't need to pull it out to inspect.

Junk engine with a rodded block? Scrap metal prices... $50 or so. Can't imagine you getting more than that.

if your block is toast, you could likely harvest off some items to sell or reuse on another block - basically everything except the block itself...or separate the aluminum when you scrap it like G_H suggested, you'll get more money.

there are many places that sell 22r/e longblocks - basic ones go for around $1200 + core deposit (~$200-400). one of these "cheapies" definitely might claim built to Toyota specs, but they would likely have not been rebuilt with Toyota parts. hard to say on the engine you're considering since we don't know anything about it.

wise advice, watch for the cheapies. Ive been suckered before, its an annoying experience. Oem components throughout are completely necessary for reliable operation. Along with good machine work. Its best to be assembling the motor yourself or at least be present during assembly to ensure specifications are followed.
Perhaps some shops do sell quality (oem quality) motors that you can trust but they are few and far between. And, the price will be well upwards of $1500.

It would be nice if more low miles, all original engines/ parts were available. They sure aren't in my area. Toyota still sells new 22r engines but yikes they're expensive
