New to the board - 87 22R 2WD running rough/afterfiring
Here's my truck:
I picked it up for $500 from a friend and it's in pretty good shape - needs tires, clutch master cylinder and a new heater control unit (anyone got one?)
But the REAL problem is that it runs oddly once it warms up. It starts right up and will idle fine when started but when driving it will surge/miss/hesitate and when idling down or engine braking it will afterfire in the exhaust (so badly to the point that it blew open my brand-new muffler that was just put on along with a completely new system from the header back.
So far the plugs, wires, cap, rotor have all been replaced. At this point I'm thinking either it's a timing issue or something's up with the carb. Am I on the right track here? Hoping to get my hands on a timing light this next week as well as a tach - I haven't worked on a Toyota this old since I owned an 81 Toyota Starlet back in 1996, and my current DD is a 2007 Prius.

I checked the timing tonight using the process mentioned in my Haynes manual and the timing was already at 0deg, so that doesn't appear to be it. Next up I need to get a tach on it and set the idle.
I did notice, however that the carb float level is at about the 2/3 level, well above half-way. Is this something that could cause my symptoms? Oh, and the previous owner had plugged the vacuum line with a nail??? So I reconnected that...

The rough running is fixed - was a stuck-open EGR valve so I yanked the EGR system and installed block plates from yotashop.com. Since the first post I've replaced the clutch master and slave, put on a new carb from national carburetors, replaced the spark plugs and replaced the brake master cylinder - need to bleed the brakes and take care of the tires and a new battery and then I'll be good to go.
