New AISIN water pumps and cracks in the casting - Your thoughts

I need to replace my water pump.

I've read a few posts about new AISIN water pumps looking like they have cracks in them right out of the box. What is everyone's thoughts on this, is it just casting marks and nothing to be concerned about? Is AISIN still the water pump I want?

Could there be cracks in New water pumps ??

Sure but if they are really cracks not surface flaws any vendor should warrant that water pump

The real question is would those cracks propagate to cause a failure in use problem ??

If the pointed headed engineers after many conferences in exotic locations decide all is well then yes said cracks could indeed be present .

Besides the AISIN water pumps I'm also looking at NPW.
Both 22rePerformance and LC-Engineering show in their pictures that NPW is at least one of the water pumps they use.

Interestingly LCE states
"We have the highest quality Toyota water pumps in stock all of which are new OEM quality Japanese-manufactured (Nissan or Aisin) pumps, not cheap Chinese rebuilds.

NPW is what NAPA sells under their imported Altrom line. Advance Auto/Car Quest also carries the line.

NPW= Nissan Pump Mfg. Co., Ltd
http://www.nitomainc.com/npw.html

Toyota PN# 16100-39346
AISIN PN# WPT-007
NPW PT# T-67

Toyota dealers may not be selling AISIN water pumps when you purchase the part directly from them. The water pump in the post below sure looks like it has NPW cast into it to me.

I found this post by snobdds https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...motors-224939/

"I just put in a new motor from 22re preformance and I could not be happier with the engine. It is truley a bolt on, drop in motor. I only have about 200 miles on it so far, but everything super quite and it has lots of power. I had jim put nothing but OEM parts from the dealer (oil pump, water pump, and all seals and gaskets).

Here it is new"

Like any other manufacture if one vendor can not meet demand depending on how the contact is written .

The vendor out sources to meet demand or the manufacture does.

Any sort of problems weather, raw materials , unruly mules or boat drivers getting lost.

Having Shutdown a Ford Plant Years ago I know all about these supply chain problems

I can't find the post's about it on this site at the moment, I should have bookmarked it. I've needed to replace it a while now so the post mentioned highly interested me. The same issue is mentioned on Amazon in a two star review by J. Cox Jr. http://www.amazon.com/Aisin-WPT-007-...owViewpoints=0

I also spoke with 22rePerformance, the person I spoke with said they love factory Toyota parts and try to sell them when they can but they won't sell AISIN water pumps. It isn't because they can't get them, they do sell some AISIN parts, he said it's because the castings look horrible and there have been a few cases of the hub not being pressed traight.

He also mentioned that the rest of the AISIN stuff is good, but for some reason their water pumps aren't that great.

.

if the 22reperformance guys don't want it, i'd be wondering as well.

i went thru this with my miata last summer, there were some differences in the vanes also, perhaps these water pumps aren't as simple as it seems.

What did you end up using?
I see a lot of the Miata guys use the NPW pumps.

I've also seen a quite a few posts on different Honda forums that say to go OEM or NPW.

I looked at a NPW pump at NAPA today. The casting looked good, when I spun it the bearings were snug/smooth with no play. I didn't notice any signs of being pressed at an angle= Impeller not straight etc

I put in a new Aisin water pump 2 years ago when I replaced my timing chain. It looked like it was cracked but it's just the way the aluminum was cast. So far no leaks. Bought it from Rock Auto.com and it was made in USA.

the miata water pump i got was a gmb: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mazda-Miata-...-/150659201436

it looks like they make stuff that fits some toyotas, judging by the contents of their latest newsletter: http://www.gmb.jp/en/news/letter/

i haven't driven the car much, not sure how good the pump really is.

GMB is a Japan based company. I have bought many GMB parts over the last 30 years, all Japanese made.

I recently bought some GMB U-joints for my '87 'Runner, only to find later that they were made in China. They looked, and fit fine, but I was more than a little disappointed.

Ordinarily, I NEVER purchase, or use, any Chinese parts, but I weakened this once.

I will be asking very pointed questions about the origin of any GMB parts in the future, before I lay my money down.

I recently bought a Japan made NPW (Nissan pump Works, I think) water pump for my 22RE build. The casting and finish look good, but I haven't run it yet.

The NPW pump I looked at was in a box that said Made in Japan. The same words were cast into the part.

Which one did you get? I'm interested in getting one as well, maybe version 2.0 or 2.5.

That's not my engine.

The NPW part is in and doing fine so far. I ditched the gasket that was included in the box for the OEM Toyota gasket. I also purchased all new bolts because they're so small that I was worried about the stock ones being brittle after all these years of heat cycling. It's not uncommon to hear of one breaking during a water pump replacement.

i installed my spare aisin pump earlier this month, as the original failed at 153k miles (and 29 years). nothing wrong with the bearings, it fit correctly, and it is working.

Aisin is good enough for for Toyota, Volvo and who knows how many other OEM's.
I just did a timing belt and water pump on an 850 Volvo, found out aisin WP is original, also one of the two computers as well.

I bought my timing chain kit, Aisin water and oil pumps from 22RE Performance and it looking like it had cracks in the aluminum casting. It's been in the yota for 2 years and so far no leaks. It also indicated "Made in USA" on the box.
