Never Been Removed Top ???

i know for a fact that my top has never been removed. i have been told that if i never taken it off i should cuz i risk ripping the seals which are expensive but i have to check.

wonder if anyone knows if this is true i want to be able to remove the top but at the same time dont wanna it to cost me if the seals rips

ive never heard of it. i have 2 87's i beileve one has bad seals but thts from ripping them on the dowel pins/lining pins. if you were really worried about it they are a flat peice of rubber tht is sandwiched between the top and the truck to make a seal. you could use old bicycle tubes, just got the air nozzel off and drill holes for the bolts.

but honestly i dont hear any noises from my top and i only have 4 bolts in during the summer, 2 in the cab and 2 in the very back.

The top on my 89 had never been off and I pulled it in 2009. Had it on and off a few times and no leaks. Pull it and go from there. Best bet is to have help pulling it and putting it back on so you don't tear anything, or kill yourself.

yes tht is a very good idea. also their is to alignment pins/dowels in the back, if you remove those you can slide the top off instead of trying to lift it off.

Oh heck that would have been helpful the first time I pulled it..... I had to crawl inside and lift it with my back to walk it towards the tailgate. That freaking top is HEAVY.

I haven't had the top on mine for over 2 years.

Get that top off then get one of these:

I bought one of those 2 years ago and LOVED it. Ended up selling it when I needed money and it was the worst thing I ever did. Wabbit makes some great stuff for our rigs, just ask me how many things on my rig have the "Wabbit stamp"!!

I copied the one-man install/removal setup on 4crawler (scroll to bottom of page) and it worked very well. Easy to make too.

Seals never gave me trouble either.

I now have a soft top and sold my hard top so the need is gone.

take it off slowly.....savor the moment.....be firm but gentle.....but always in control.....hehehehhe

the seal is about the same as the stuff around the doors......and that doesn't leak....i hope.

Here's a pic of mine coming off for the first time. You have to record that special moment.

Make sure when you put it back on, you follow the steps in the owners manual. It makes a difference on how it seals.

Make sure to secure your goodies, so the crooks don't get off with your valuables. I run mine topless 5-6 months out of the year.

Hey TwistedYota, how did you remove the allignment pins? Do they just unscrew or did you have to cut them off? I'd like to make it possible to slide the top off. I'm either very weak or very lazy.
