need quick answers on 22re to 3.0 swap in 93 pickup

I'm trying to budget build a somewhat trashed 93 pickup that originally came with the 22re. I found a good running 3.0 from a 92 for $300.

Can I use my 22re manual tranny and tcase or do I need the 3.0 tranny and tcase?

Do I need the wiring harness and ecu from the 3.0? I read somewhere that there is a plug and play adapter harness for this swap somewhere, does that just plug into the factory harness? Any info on that would be great.

I need to know asap, I might be picking up the motor and what else I need tomorrow.

Really? Wow thanks for that useful bit of info. I did search and found tons of threads on swapping the 3.0 for the 22re, and even those all I learned was something about the bellhousing, didn't even make sense. I found nothing about wiring. If you know of all these threads, then perhaps make use of yourself and post a link? Thanks.

I have never seen or heard of a plug and play 22re to 3vze harness and I seriously doubt (very very seriously doubt) a 22re ECU could ever run a 3vze for many reasons. This would be a mild gain for a lot of headache getting the install done. By the time you bought a transmission, tcase, worked out the wiring, drive flanges/driveshafts, bought all the little sensors that needed replaced, vacuum lines etc. you could afford a decently built 22re or even better have your 22re rebuilt how you want it.

If I was in your situation and an engine swap was my thing I'd go with a 3rz. It's a peppy engine, simple, reliable and would potentially use the same transmission you have (you didn't mention what it is but I believe the W series transmissions will work).

I'm having a tough time understanding why you'd even want to ditch the 22re and place a 3VZE in. There are very marginal gains to be had with the 3.0L and the reliability issue that comes with it. Stick with the 22RE...rebuild it or buy used and you'll be miles ahead of the headache to ensue with this endeavor.

On a side note: I work with two Toyota techs trained from the start to work only on Yota's...they both snickered when I shared this question/ thread with em'. Not trying to ridicule you just trying to help...so please see this for what it is.

If there were to be a swap that would make quite a bit more sense it would be for the 5VZFE 3.4L. A bit more power and torque than the 3.0L....albeit harder to find...but more write ups on here than you can shake a stick at.

Hope this helps you out and keep us posted on which way you go.

If I could find a 22re or 3.4 for 300 and it ran I would definitely be doing that. However this is a budget build and so far all I'm seeing for 22re motors they are 1k for rebuildable cores. I don't have a useable core either, that's why I'm shopping for a cheap motor. Maybe its the 3.4 that has the harness adapter, I've heard about it before but I wasn't engine shopping at the time so I didn't party attention. But sounds like the 3.0 is not worth my time, even tho the motor is cheap. thanks for the responses.

Waste of time on the 3.0 even if it was free.

You are not going to find a "engine swap for dummies" on any motor swap. Too many variables model to model so the basics are there and you have to do the work figuring out what applies to you, like wiring.

There are too many different things between the two to make this worth it, the motor mounts are located on a different spot on the frame so you will have to fab them, the radiators are different, the 22re comes with a 2 core and the 3.0 has a 3 core radiator.
The wiring will be different and trans will be different. After you get done with the swap, with parts and labor (Your time isn't free is it?) You will be more into this than simply finding or rebuilding a 22re and you will have done all this work for a motor that most view as a boat anchor.
Keeping the 22re will have a much bigger group of buyers when you do decide to sell one day.
