Need Help. Only starts when I move VAF
Hi,
1992 3.0 v6 4runner I bought from somebody with a blown head gasket. All the parts were basically in a plastic bag and a crate. I replaced the timing belt and head gasket and now it will only start when I move the throttle type thing inside the VAF. I removed the silicon seal and opened it up. When I move the throttle type thing, it starts up and runs real rough.
Can I adjust the VAF?
Should I?
What should I look for that is causing this problem?
It seems like the timing is ok but who knows.
I got the 2 white dots to match up while the #1 cyl. was at tdc and zero degrees at bottom.
I don't have the vaccum lines connected to blue sensor described below. Could that be a source of poor idle?
Another question is???? What hoses attach to the VFF sensor? That is blue that has 2 nipples for hoses sticking out of it. I saw the description in another post that read one of them goes to the charcoal filter but im not sure about the other. Also, there are 2 metal pieces that look like they get vacuum lines as well that are in front of and above the 5 sensors that are behind the plenum. Any suggestions about what goes to them????
I searched and didn't find anything. I really appreciate the help. Sorry if the questions seem stupid.

Try the fuel pump test jumper:

The Circuit Opening Relay may not be getting the signal from the ignition switch to turn on the fuel pump while starting.

thanks
thanks a million for replying.
I jumped the fuel pump per the page and it still wont start. The only thing that makes it start is moving the vaf thing.
I should have added that I took the ignition out because its worn and im using a screwdriver to start it from the white thing thats coming out of the ignition. All the lights are coming on but the radio won't work now. Maybe theres some kind of weird security feature??
Also, I'm not sure whether the hoses at rear sensor plenum are hooked up correctly. Not sure if it makes a difference. When it starts, its real rough.
I'm going to buy a new rotoe & dist. just to have them.
All the fuses on panel and under hood are ok.
I'm open to any other suggestions.

yes
yes i do hear it running. I can hear it go on when I jump it and I can hear it when I move the vaf thing. Also, I opened the fuel rail a little and there was a lot of pressure. I listened to the fuel rail for the pulsing of the fuel injectors and heard them pulsing too. Thanks.

Sounds like your timing is messed up. I know you said you had the crank at 0* and the cams at 12 o'clock, but did you install the distributor properly? If you've got fuel, air and spark, my guess is that the timing is incorrect. Even a tooth off will cause it to run like a bag of rocks falling down a spiral staircase.
Also, you get #1 at TDC on the compression stroke?

thanks
I checked it last night. I changed it a few times just to make sure. Maybe I'll check it again. When I run it with the vaf, it does sputter and backfire like when you pull a spark plug wire out. It def. looks like the rotor is in the right place. I pulled it and moved it to the right and left and they both seemed way off. Thanks to everybody for all the help. I hope to contribute as soon as I can offer good info to others from my experience and research.
