Need Help With No. 1 Idler Pulley
1995 toyota 4runner 4wd 3.0
My buddy and I have been working on his '95 for awhile now. we replaced the head gasket and decided to replace the timing belt as well. For some reason the idler pulley does not fit properly. (yes I have it in the right spot) There is a lip on the head that doesn't allow me to even put the washer on. even if I try without the washer, the fan bracket rubs against the pulley. To the best of my knowledge Im not missing anything but if you can think of something I could be missing, I definitely could use the advice.

Are you sure you have the right pulley? Older models had a spring tensioner, and you have a hydraulic tensioner. http://web.archive.org/web/201003261...67timingbe.pdf

I think this is your issue unless I'm confused about the part in questions....I'm answering this from memory (I changed my '94 one in February), so details might be off....This is the idler pulley bracket? 1) I would put a brand new aisin one in. The old one is bound to fail sooner rather than later. 2) ther is a small pin (?) that need to be compressed until you get bracket in place to bolt on. That is the hydraulic tensioner. I used a B&D Workmate bench (wood surface) to compress pin, then put an opened paperclip in hole to hold it, install that way, then pull paperclip to release tensioner. That's how I remember it...
