Need Help...Mechanic says Oil Pump

My truck is a 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 2.7L manual.

Oil light comes on during low idle after trucks been running and warmed up. I have also lost of power while I shift gears. I took it to mechanic to see whats going on, because I could not pinpoint the problem myself. The mechanic told me it might be the oil pump and it would cost me $1500. Is that about right? how difficulty would it be for me to change it myself?

I need help. The mechanic said he THINKS it could be, but says that it could be more...what else could it be? He doesn't really know.

You need to either use a mechanical oil pressure gauge to test the oil pressure or find a mechanic to do it for you. That will tell you if the pump is shot.
The "mechanic" you took it to should have done that. It's easy.

He put one into the oil pressure sending unit and it was reading (after truck warmed or running temperature) at 3000rpms, 10PSI and lower.... does that mean its an oil pump problem?

He is trying to tell us that it could be some else internal problem.

Sigh ... There is just no way to know for sure.

Oil pumps are such simple devices that they rarely fail. But you could get a bunch of gunk on the pickup screen, or you could have a clogged passage somewhere.

More likely, you have very loose bearing tolerances. If the bearings aren't close to spec., there is nothing to back up the oil and give you pressure. The oil is just getting pumped right through the rattly bearings.

So it "might" be the oil pump, and $1,500 is about the right price. It's almost all labor, so you could save money by doing it yourself http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...ine/9cylin.pdf I'm just not sure that would solve your problem.

Red face

Saying it is the oil pump is wishful thinking . Never having seen one of these up close but the oil pump mounts to the timing cover like the 22r series.

You just don`t know till things get pulled apart .

Thing is where do you stop .

Since you were unable to attach a manual gauge is installing a different engine beyond your capability for what ever reason.

Another thing 186,000 miles when should one change the timing chain on these ??

you need to think about your options and what works best for you.
