Hey guys, I'm in the process of rebuilding my 22r and I'm going to have to scrap it. I'm not impressed with this engine so far, but hopefully I just got a fluke engine because all my research suggests its one of Toyota's best. I've just never come across an engine as worn out as this thing is (I build BMW engines). What are some upgrade options? Could I swap in a v6, or would I be best just sticking with another 22r? I priced out a brand new reman short block for $1200 which isn't too bad, and I'm kinda leaning in that direction.

Just how was it worn more then any other engine you have seen??

What was the history any engine run without oil or coolant for any time tends to be in rough shape??

I have two of these engines still going but for timing chains and normal maintenance over 250,000 miles.

Lots of swaps out there depending what your looking for your budget is the limiting factor

no mention of the mileage on the unimpressive engine? 50k? 200k? 400k? how much of its history do you know?

This engine has 200k on it and looks like it wasn't cared for very well. I'm just frustrated with it is all. I find more and more problems with it the deeper I dive into it. I routinely tear down BMW engines with 400k+ on them that see half their life in excess of 4500rpm and they still have nice cross hatching in the cylinders. These cylinders are badly glazed, the crank journals are severely worn, and two of the pistons have broken rings which have cause bad marring on the cylinder walls and piston skirts.

I suppose I'm not being fair though. I'm coming from high end engines to this and it's clear it hasn't been cared for. I'm not new to Toyota but I'm new to this particular engine. I suppose I shouldn't jump to conclusions, should I?

right. don't jump to conclusions about a motor with unknown history. broken rings suggests it was overheated, perhaps severely/repeatedly. that isn't good maintenance or practice.

i would tend to guess that a fair number of those bmws with 400k+ miles involved more than just routine maintenance to get there. that (high mileage) is not the reputation of bmw engines.

Actually no, most of the bmws I see just have regular maintenance with maybe some light valve or head work if the maintenance has been neglected. But that's a topic for another day

But you're right, there's signs that this engine has been severely overheated. It's weird to me that someone would treat an engine so badly, but I guess it was running when I tore it down so that's saying something.

Thanks for listening to me vent! I'll collect myself and move forward with my project. I'll have a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into this thing for sure!

Dont give up. I have my original to me 86 4runner (actually its in my youngest sons care now) that has over 900k on it. We have replaced timing chains and such over the years but no major mechanical. I swear by Amsoil products. He just recently did a full rebuild on the engine. It was originally a 22re that was converted to carb at around 400k.
