Exclamation mysteriuous oil leak from transfer case

With all the little aches and pains my '93 165,500 miles V6 4Runner has, there is one bizarre one since a few days that befuddles me completely.

I live in San Francisco. Hill city.
When parked on a hill, front up or perpendicular, so that the driver side is downhill I get a red oil leak out of the transfer case part (SEE pic), but only when the engine is off.
Is the driver side on the uphill side or the car facing downhill all is OK.

The oil drips out of what seems a factory "hole" in the transfer case assembly.
WTF?

Anyone have a clue? I'm totally clueless on this one.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm rebuilding my transmission right now, and noticed this hole too. It's a weep hole for the seal that sits right on that hole. If it starts leaking, it means the seal is starting to fail, and if the second lip fails you will have a big leak.

Thank you for your reply DonHagen
this car is such a needless at the time over-engineered piece of... so unlike what I am used to from Toyota. (I had a used Landcruiser for 10 years)

Not good news! Which part is it sealing from/in-between?
What if I plug it?
Or what if I simply stick a little hose/tube in pointing upward?
Your thoughts?
As mentioned it only does it when parked on a (steep) hill, mainly perpendicular, (90°) so that the driver side is downhill.

I am pretty sure that seal stops the transmission and transfer case from sharing oil. If it were to go you could have an overfilled side, and might pop out other seals or starve the high end if on a hill. From what I can tell it is only an indicator, as this leak could go completely undetected, kind of like internal bleeding. You could potentially plug it without any problems, but remember that the seal is going. The tcase is basically a mini automatic transmission, so it's not quite as easy as most vehicles to remove it. That being said, it's still doable if you leave the transmission in the vehicle. Use this manual: http://www.google.ca/url?url=http://...VBCS04GCHB18dQ
It should have everything you need, step by step if you're up for it.
