My first 4x4, 1987 4runner, 22RE
Howdy, and thanks for being an awesome forum. I've learned quite a bit in the past few days thanks to you guys.
Just to start out, I just bought a 1987 4runner with the 22re automatic tranny. I knew at the time of the sale that the chain was going to need to be dealt with but it's in the condition I wanted (150k miles as well) and at the price I wanted.
Just inspected the chain guide this morning and the drivers side has the typical failure I've read about. Thankfully the train tracks are super shallow and it doesn't appear to have come anywhere near to cutting into the water jacket. I'm curious after reading some posts here, any thoughts on other preventative maintenance or work to do when tackling the chain issue with a local mechanic? I'm primarily using this as a camping / street truck as I have a 3 minute walk to work.
So far I'm strongly considering:
1. typical chain kit with seals and everything (probly from engnbldr with the steel backed guide)
2. new water pump
3. new oil pump
4. thermostat
5. having the radiator checked / replaced
Being a newbie, I've got to tease you guys a little bit. I'm planning on keeping the top off as much as possible during the summer so the first fun mod I'm planning is a rear seat delete, followed by spraying (not rolling) Monstaliner on the entire interior and exterior of the truck. Should make for a durable and fun Colorado vehicle.
