is it my clutch or tranny...crazy vibrations
so a few weeks ago i noticed this crazy vibration when i was on the freeway.
the shifter was vibrating, the floor boards was vibrating and i mean shaking.
so i slowed down and noticed a noise that i didnt hear before..Honestly sounded like a 18 wheeler coming to a stop.
what i noticed was when i lay of the gas at about 45 50 mph there is a crazy vibration, sounds like metal is running next to each other. when i hit the gas, the vibration goes away.
i looked around and i know its not the cv joints because i just did them in jan.
My guess is the tranny, also when i shift from 4th gear to 5th gear..doesn't feel like it shifted..
i down shift from 5th to 4th..no high rev or anything..
any help would be awesome..

If you have jack stands you can hold up the back of the truck (so the wheels are off the ground). Then start the truck and put it in gear. Then investigate to see if you can figure out where the noise is coming from. Be careful in doing so, as there is some inherent danger to it.

I'm with the other guys and the U-joint issue. Mark where the rear shaft lines up on the transmission and rear diff flanges, drop it (8 bolts, takes a few minutes) then drive around in 4x4 (front wheel drive, really) and see if the noise goes away. Far easier than opening up your rear pumpkin.

okay guys, checked out the u joints and the drive line and everything seems to be intact. Did not grease the u joints. What i did notice was the passenger side drive shaft is gone. The CV boots are busted, and when i turn the drive line, the passenger side drive shaft turns. i don't think it should. I drive around in 2wheel drive only. but that could be the sound of metal rubbing against each other, but that doesn't explain the vibration that i get. any takes?

i also agree with u-joints
I suspected mine and tried to test them and everything seemed tight.
The roar got louder and louder so I went back and pulled the DS and low and behold the things were toast. 1 had no ball bearings left in it and it was worn half way through.
