so today i was playing in my runner and i hit this hole thinking ok ive gone through this before this will be fun or so i thought. we hit it and there was water up to the door, you could litteraly only see one or two inches of my 31x10.5.15s. well when i hit it i was in 4low at about 4500rpms and i got in the middle of it and the truck died. we got it out and tried to start it and the starter sounded like it was grinding. i pulled the plugs and theres water in the cylinders the entire intake system is soked but it will turn over by hand but it will not start any suggestions?

If i hydrolocked it I wouldnt be able to turn it by hand

Pull the distributor cap and spray it down with WD-40 as well as the rotor and give it a good wipe down, check your electrical's and all that good stuff, dry off and double check any connections and make sure your fuel pump is coming on

when i pulled off the distributor it was completely dry

it wont even turn over the starter sounds like grinding gears in a manual transmission

My lawnmower had a similar sound to it, turned out the starter gear wasn't contacting the flywheel, crawl up under their and have a buddy crank on it, and see if you can see anything happening...when all else fails, pull the starter and get a better look, and nothing beats a google search for some problems. Also try tapping the starter with a hammer and see if maybe there's something rattling loose inside of it

sounds like a worn flywheel. but that wouldn't have anything to do with sinking it in a mudhole.... unless there is granular material from the bottom inside.....

If there was water in the cylinders when you pulled the plugs, you hydrolocked it.
Pull the starter and inspect in that hole. There may be mud preventing it from engaging. Is it an auto or manual?

just because you can turn it, doesnt mean its not screwed...
i did almost the same exact thing as you except it wasnt mud, it was just a large water puddle after a lot of rain. the truck died right in the middle of it at about 3k.
i tried starting it 2 times right after it died in the water and all i got was a loud click from what seemed like the starter. got it home and pulled the plugs and it turned over pushing a lot of water out. put the plugs back in and it started but ran like complete dog crap and had no power. towed it over to my dads friend who is a mechanic and he pulled it apart to find this.


the really bent rod had actually gouged out a creator about 1/4'' deep at the bottom of the cylinder wall. it was one of my proudest moments

if you were asking me, it was out in the sticks from where i lived, and the first time i went through the puddle, it was probably 75-100 feet across and about 6-8'' deep in the middle. the next day when i went through it, it was a little bit bigger from more rain but, i think i just happed to find a deep hole that when the truck was stopped, it was to the bottom of my headlights.

So i got it to start but before i checked the block and its still intact as far as i can see. Its running like ˟˟˟˟ im loosing compression and it sucked a quarter tank of gas within 2 minutes of having it started. I just picked up the 3.4 and am going to be doing the swap to it. The hole i went through you could only see about an inch of the 31s on it and i hit the hole too fast next time i need to SLOW it down

Get a snorkel and turn it backwards when you hit stuff fast.

perfect time to do the 3.4 swap! now when you start the swap, pull apart the 22RE and post pictures!
