Tire positioning brackets bolted up, but the center cable-lift doesn't line up on my 91 cross-member.

Before I start drilling holes, I wanted to ask how the earlier lifts operated?

Existing cross-member holes seem to favor a passenger side operation (The 94 operated from the drivers side).

Pictures? I think at one point they were chains instead of cables. Mine is thru the bumper, didn't even know the 4runners were on the sides

Anyways pictures would help. Someone could likely help but they can only guess at what you have on hand.

I am intrested in solving this question. I would like to run dual factory spare tire carriers. I also happen to own a 91 and 94 4runner, and I have pictures.

Here are pictures from my rusty 94 runner, as you can see the spare has been cut out already. This parts are junk in my opinion. I would like to source new OEM parts to install on my clean 91 runner.

Now the vehicle we want to install this into, a 91 runner that already has the swing out spare tire carrier.










Notice this metal plate welded behind the bumper, this might prevent use of the rod that lowers and raises the spare.







Also, pay close attention to the how the hitch ties into the frame on the clean 4runner, that might make bolting one of the parts in difficult. I really dont want to have to do hitch mods for this.

Living in Dexter Mi are you only planning to drive in the summer putting a spare under there.

If your not plan on lowering it at least once a week.

These sometimes even fail in the Southwest.

Here in Pa Every one I had needed to be cut off.

Haha. Yes the clean 4runner does not get driven during the salty season. I found that packing the cable box with grease helps alot on preventing seize up. However it was to late for the rusty 4runner. But this is now standard practice in my family. No issues with my 2001 runner.

That rusty 4runner was a hand me down when I went off to college. Driven all year round over in west michigan (lots more snow and salt) and never washed either. My other one came from texas and has seen some winter duty, mostly when my beater jeep was acting up, so most of the time. Since then I found a new winter beater.

Bump on this. I'm getting ready to attempt this. I need a good photo of the backside of a rear bumper from a vehicle with the underbody spare tire. It must be from a vehicle that came with the big tire option. Shots like the last 3 posted above would be excellent.

last time I was under there, I bolted up the 2 brackets that positioned the tire and looked at mounting options for remaining components.

Seemed some holes lined up, but others did not...or didn't exist.

I got the impression that a hole-saw would probably improve some angles, if components were to be mounted in original locations.

I didn't see how the bumper access hole would play nice, with that turn item that originally mounts on the driver-side of the frame...

if you have a 4runner that came with 31 inch tires and an underside spare tire carrier there should be a plastic thing to guide the tool. while digging through my scrap pile I found the rear bumper off the rusty vehicle pictured above, problem is that everything is to rotted to recognize how it is supposed to function. the plastic piece fell off immediately.
