modded 22re fails emissions at idle
I rebuilt my 90 4Runner top end after the head gasket blew. I replaced several of the stock components with aftermarket parts. I installed a Enginebldr 268 cam, a Nippon Racing ported head, new valves (stock size), and a K&N air filter. I also removed the EGR system and plugged it off. The truck runs great now but I had to take it in for emissions testing and while it was well below max emissions at speed it was 75% over at idle on HCs. This seems to indicate that it's running rich but I haven't changed the AFM settings at all and my mods should have made it run leaner. I've checked timing, valve lash (which is at .07 and .011 hot), cleaned the throttle body and checked the TPS.
And yes, I do know that the EGR is for emissions but my understanding of it was it recirculates exhaust gas at speed and should not affect idle. The EGR system was bad and a Toyota mechanic pal suggested to just remove it. Ran fine since.
Any one run into similar problems?
