mechanical windows not working

Fixing all of the small things on my 86 pickup which actually has 87 4runner doors. I installed the hanndles for the windows and neither roll up or down. The small knobs spin freely in both directions. I caant seem to feel any issues inside the track system(hard to see). I assume this is a common problem being that both doors are doing this. Any ideas?

Red face

Are the handles just spinning on the regulators??

I have seen the plastic in the handles so worn they no longer work.

The regulators themselves are both broken and just spin without moving the arms.

If the window was loose in the track you would feel something move.

What position are the windows in now??

like wyoming9 said. ^^^

And windows are not difficult to inspect/troubleshoot.

See FSM.
It's really easy to remove plastic handle , door panel and regulator - but be careful not to lose the locking clip on handle.
If teeth on plastic handle are not worn, remove door panel, and check regulator. Good idea to lubricate it anyway.
Warning: Be careful when cycling uninstalled regulator; Gear may go past the sprocket, spring-load will release and you could pinch a finger.
If broken, replacement regulators are inexpensive. Be sure which side you're buying and whether it's for door with or without vent windows.

Tools needed:
  • Rag (for removing clip on handle)
  • Philips screwdriver
  • 10-mm socket and ratchet or 10-mm combination wrench
Supplies:
  • Grease for regulator
  • Solvent for removing old grease (minimal amount)
  • Tape in case you need to mend waterproofing plastic sheet.
  • Beer

So, instead of possibly just needing new handles, you ordered new regulators without verifying that you need them?
