Manual Windows Hard To Crank

Hey all... I've got a '90 Pickup with manual windows, and sometimes they can be hard as heck to crank!

It seems to be pretty dependent on the outside temperature though. On some days it's way harder to crank than others (it can be REALLY bad at its worst.. to the point where it feels like something will break) and on other days it's not that bad.

It's always worse rolling the windows down than cranking them back up.

Wondering if anyone else has had issues with this on their older truck/runner and have any tips?

It's probably a pretty straight forward mod/repair to get them running smoothly again, just figure'd I'd pick yer brains first. I'm thinking lining the rails with some kind of teflon wear strips might really help, but maybe there is something else I should look at too.

TIA

The grease has gotten hard in the regulators. You need to clean the old grease out and re-grease them. The weather seals have probably gotten hard too.

Both of my toyotas had worn out window regulators. The driver side window on my '87 could be pushed down quite easily the regulator was so stripped out. One day, a guy in a parking lot saw me messing with it, and told me that his is the same way.

I don't think these regulators were made to last 20 years. I found aftermarket replacements online, but I haven't ordered any yet. I don't know how good they are, but at some point I will order them and find out.

Thanks for the replies!

Didn't even know those things were called regulators.

RockAuto sells 'em for $50 a side, but for now I'll probably just look into regreasing the ones that are in there, and changing the weatherstripping.

Have you redone your weather-seals InternetRoadkill? If so what did you use?
