Loud ticking after valve adjustment

well i was getting a minor ticking sound on my 22re, i adjusted the valves to .008 and .012 and now the ticking is louder than ever(sounds like a frikin deisel)

I set the engine to TDC, pulled the valve cover adjusted the correct ones, turned the motor over 360 degrees and adjusted the others... Did i do something wrong?

oh i did it twice

Thanks,
Tom

Sounds like your not doing something correctly is your motor fully warm when you adjust them?

Also check your timing guides asap if one of them is broken your chain is probably slapping the timing cover

motor fully warm, guides are fine, but would valve adjustment affect that?

EDIT: ok i checked the timing chain and its very loose on the driver side i guess this is the noise im hearing, any input?

try tightening them to .007" intake, .011" exhaust.

If its loose your tensioner might be bad. I would recommend getting a timing set (chain, guides, tensioner, gaskets, gears) and replacing everything

And you dont want to drive on a loose timing chain, it will wear a hole in the timing cover then your in for a new cover as well as timing components

ok gonna order the new timing set w/ cover (just in case its done some damage) from engnbldr, does it come with the gaskets and whatnot?

I did my headgasket about 3 months ago and the timing guides looked fine, I should have replaced the timing chain but was being cheap and lazy

Thanks for your help algranger, I probably would have continued to over look the timing chain and adjusted the valves another hundred times LOL

I've heard bad things about engnbldr's timing sets (never bought one myself) but it sounds like they are good as long as you dont overtorque the guides.

No problem, good luck!

If adjusting the valves to spec- hot: .008" intake / .012" exhaust (or .007" intake / .010"-.011" exhaust when cold - unconfirmed by myself if those work but many people say it's fine), and you still have a noisy valve train, likely the problem is worn rocker arms and/or worn rocker shafts. Overall, those parts being worn won't effect the engine operation (much) since the valves are adjusted properly and that takes up the slack in those components.

Since the rocker arms and rocker shafts only experience a significant load when the cam is opening a valve, the bottom side of the rocker shafts and the top side of the rocker arm wear more than the rest. And that's why you end up with the rattling that sounds like loose valves and can't get rid of it no matter how much you adjust the valves.

Now above, I said it won't affect the engine "much" because if you have the knock sensor, that rattling might trip the knock sensor and cause your timing to fall back to baseline as if you were experiencing detonation. Keep in mind I said "might" so that doesn't mean it will happen, just that it's possible.
Otherwise, you should be able to expect at least another 100K+ miles out of the engine if the timing chain, guides and tensioner are working fine too.

So I am another lurker, been reading a lot on here since buying my 95 22re last year. I just had my timing chain (and a bunch o other stuff) replaced, as well as having them adjust my valve clearances. Truck was given back to me sounding like a diesel. Aside from my personal frustrations, I am really just interested in what is worth replacing in order to deal with this issue. A friend of mine was kind enough to readjust my valves, and the engine sounds decent now, though there is still a reasonable bit of racket from the valves. I think we set the clearances tight on the .008 and the .012 feeler gauges, but there was enough to be able to wiggle them out. What exactly should it feel like when you are using the feelers to set a clearance?

When is it time to go for replacing rocker arms and shafts?

Thanks fellas.
