looking for opinions on the 3.0 v6

my 22 re just went in my pickup so i'm looking for another toyota for a winter beater then drop the motor in my truck in the spring.anyway i came across a 90's v6 5 speed. the guy is away till next week so dunno the exact year yet.its in really good shape for a good price i'm willing to buy because of the shape its in.everyone i talk to is telling me to stay away from it because of headgasket issues. its got 340 000kms but seems to run great. i've searched alot on these just looking to see what everyones opinions are. is there any other problems the v6's have?i notice the 4x4 setup seems to be different on it too.

The 3.0 V6 is not the greatest engine Toyota ever built. My family owns two 4Runners, both with the 3.0 V6 ('92 5 speed 340,000 miles and '90 Automatic 220,000 miles). The 5spd has a bit of pep but doesn't have the power to make it a speeder. The Auto has had to be rebuilt twice because of characteristic bad heads with the 3.0L. It would of been cheaper over the long run to upgrade to a 3.4L in the automatic. The only upside I see to the 3.0 is the availability....they are all over the place.

around here its hard to find the 3.0 liters thats what i'm worried about if the motor goes. i guess if i can get the winter out of it, it'd be worth what i pay for it. probably get some money back for the frame and body since they are in great shape for around here.

If you only plan on having it for the winter and its a good price I wouldn't worry too much about it, I wouldn't recommend dropping that 3.0 into your current truck I would rebuild your 22re over the winter. With that being said I have a 22r and a 3.0 I like the pep of the 3.0 over the 22r but but if I had been able to find my 4runner with a 22re I would have bought that one instead.

definately putting a 22re back in my other one. i'd like to strip the truck down and clean the frame up when i put the lift in it so figired if i bought this other one for the winter could work at the pickup over the winter

If the price is right.... buy it! Any vehicle that is almost 20 yrs old, is gonna give some problems.....22re or 3.slow. That being said...I've had relatively good luck with all of mine. None of them had any problems what so ever till after 230k.

I agree with Team420, mine has about 200,000 on it and no problems for the PO I've only put about 3k on it so far but its a good truck with more power then my 22r so I'll keep her to she blows and either do a 3.4 or a 22re (I know not the normal swap but one more capable with my abilities :-)...)

In Feb I bought a 89 xCab with a 3vz(stock gears and 33 12.5 15's) that wouldnt even keep up speed on the interstate. 100% thanx to this forum its a decent v6. From what I understand if you catch cyl 6 before a valve burns up, youre good. Put a set of after market headers(and collector is best) on it, and its good to go.
I also have a reg cab 90 22re. Its a breeze to work on with about the same amount power as the 3vz. So x2- I would just rebuild the 22re and keep a 3vz to toy around on.

pretty sure i have another good 22re lined up to drop in my pickup and i'll keep the old motor to rebuild if needed. it had 355000kms knocks in the top and bottom end and the head gasket was going so it was pretty hurting. i was just hoping to find a 22re winter beater and put the motor in the truck in the spring but the v6 is in pretty good shape to pass up for $600

Yeah for $600 I would be all over that! Its hard to find a cheap 22re that is running so picking up that v6 to beat around will be a good deal as long as it is a solid motor
