Look what finally came in.....

Bought this motor a few months ago, and it finally got here yesterday. It's from a 92 runner(was mine, and I totaled it, and sold as a parts truck 4 years ago....doh!!) and only has 136k on it. This motor ran great when I last used it( I was the last person to run it), except that it had the nasty water pump noise(bearing, I think??). My intentions for it are, to basicly tear it apart, and rebuild while its out, then put it in the 93, with the tranny I have in my garage(also from same truck). Any tips or advise on this? I have never swapped one of these motors before, nor have I torn one down...so this is meant to be a learning experience....but I would like to do it right. I'm thinking...run compression test to make sure there is nothing wrong, then tear into it, replace all gaskets and seal, oil pump...water pump...t-belts, knock sensor and pigtail....am I forgetting anything?
Before you guys tell me I should just toss it in, and not worry about the rebuild....I want to rebuild it, it should be a lot easier to do while out of the truck, then in...and once I get this puppy in...I dont wanna have to touch it again for a while, then I will have the other motor out of the 93, to rebuild, and have for next time one of my rigs needs a motor.

I think it's a good idea, especially if you already got a 3.0L on the one you're driving. Plan on modding that 3.0L while it's on the motor stand?
Headers, oversized valves, cam, ream out all your intake to get better flow?
You got the time.

Looks like a good project. If a 3.0L fell into my lap I wouldn't get rid of it. I'd do what you are doing, but with some goodies in it. It will make the swap easier when you need to do it, if you're running one now.

I'll keep checking this to see where you go. Include prices if you can.
Thanks, Phil

How are you going to do the compression test if it is not installed in a vehicle? Just curious.

Super easy to turn it over with the starter motor. 12V battery and jumper cables.

^ exactly.... Unfortunately...I have no planned mods...just fix her up good, and throw it in... but now, after thinking on it all day...I might just swap this one in as is(+new water pump, t-belt...etc), and just rebuild the one I pull out...This one did always run well, and the motor I'm pullin...well...it still runs...but needs tlc.
So now I'm torn...I know the sensible thing to do...but I would hate to get this motor in, and 6mos down the road, wish I had rebuilt it. And if I do rebuild it...then what to do with the old one??? I cant afford to rebuild both...not anytime soon any way....

O...and yes...all of my yotas have the infamous 3.slow.... I dont know why everyone hates them...they have always done right by me....
