locking hub problem

hi guys! i tried searchin and i cant find a problem quite like mine, today on the way out of a trail i was going down a gaswell road and i started getting a growling sound in the passnger locking hub. it was just a random, intermittent, about every 2-6 secnds roughly, it was just at random. i jumped out and unlocked my hubs, and they still did it, and i pushed the truck and looked and the hub will not disengage. the dial goes to free but when the wheels spin so do the cv's. i took the hubs all apart and nothing looks wrong, and i reassembled them twice and still they wont disengage, and my 4x4 was working when the noise came about.if anyone has any ideas please let me know. thanks!

Are you sure the noise is from hub. I use to have the same notice only it came from a brass bushing located on back side of spindle. If you remove a axle you can see this bushing. I greased mine and it fixed my notice. I found that removing the center bolt from the axle that you can then push it back enough to spoon grease into that bushing. You may want to try this. There's nothing in a hub that can roar unless the teeth would be worn off allowing the gear to slip in the hub. In that case it would be full of shavings when you disassembled them. Are you sure that your hubs are working correctly. Did you test them prior to installing to make sure the gear is sliding out when turning the dial.

You also stated that you jumped out and unlocked the hubs but the axle still turned. Did you take the transfer case out of 4wd. If you didn't then that's why the axle turned. Does your truck have the ADD setup? Just curious I'm use a phone to view this site so if your truck is in your sig sorry I can't see it.

Uhm step 6b right, can't imagine the handle is that wore out maybe a bent pawl or nick in the clutch/housing? Grinding noises are pretty much always damage, debris, or lack of lube.

Good luck, keep lookign you'll find it.

I doubt the hubs were making the noise. No moving parts unless hubs are being turned. Most likely brass sleeve as Toyota Boy concluded.

Your stuck hub coul be a result of old sticky grease. Take apart, clean, and lightly grease.
