LOCKER Questions

Hey all I am buying a Locker for my 95 4runner, just want to make sure I get the right one. Its a 95 4runner V6 axle code is G144. is that the 30 count axle spline, 8 inch, 4 pinion diff? is this correct?

The only differences were gear ratio and 2 or 4 pinions (V6/turbo diff).

According to the axle code decoder for G/14/4:
G= 8"
14= 4.88 gear ratio
4= 4 pinion

Just going that, the third probably came off a V6 auto with the 31" tire package.

Third means third member. Unlike Dana or Corporate where you pull the diff cover to get to the gears, it has a drop out front section like a Ford 9".

Locker under 200 dollars = Used lockright, spool, or weld the spider gears. This is not a cheap hobby, so don't cheap out.

Apparently Aussie Lockers are quite good. They are just like a Lockright, but supposedly stronger and smoother. I think I will be buying one soon. Have a look. www.offroadlockers.com

I would recommend driving a locker-equipped vehicle before buying one. Find a member on Yotatech etc., go to your local offroad shop/ club and ask if anyone would be willing to demo their locker.

Yes, the 8 inch differential (third member includes the housing) has 30 splines. The 7.5" diff front the front of your truck is 27 splines.

And the installation of your locker requires a dial indicator. It goes along the lines of:

"If you have to ask, you shouldn't do it yourself"

I really don't think they will get one out by then, but prove me wrong, I'd love to get a Aussie and have cheap 4.56 thirds (4.56 are V6 third which currently Aussie does not make a locker for).

As far as I know, the problem is that there is apparently only one way to make a locker that will fit in a 4 pinion diff and Lockright is pretty protective of its patent.

The aussie v6 has been "comming soon" for the past 3 years or so. They are so unreliable - I got tired of waiting and got the original lockright. Total wait time = 7 days for shipping from georgia.

I assume your response is to that of a spool install. There is absolutely no need for a dial indicator to check backlash if the instructions for a drop in locker are properly followed. Also there is no thrust washer or clutch clearances to check with a 4 pinion locker. This only applies to a 2 pinion carrier. The install for a 4 pinion is easier than the 2 pinion and it does not require pulling the ring gear off the carrier.

I've posted this before and Matt16 obviously has read it. Some searching online etc. will fill anyone in on the full story. The WHOLE drop in locker started with a 4 pinion carrier, on a Dodge truck if I'm not mistaken. The guy who did this started Lock Rite, joined with Richmond and they started making lockers for 2 pinion carriers etc. Detroit only changed the 4 pinion locker by using single springs with a flat peg to ride on the springs.

Since there is nearly zero difference in making a 4 pinion locker, I seriously doubt that Aussie will EVER come out with one.

I should also tell you that after you get the locker and diff together it's a good idea to put the axles in it for a test before you put it in the axle housing on the truck. Since there is no clearances to check on the locker you may find the locker does not release easy. If this is the case you'll need to pull the locker and change to a thinner thrust washer. Otherwise if you do like the instructions, you'll have the diff and axles back in on the truck when you find the locker not working correctly.

Ok, one last post. The strength differences between the 2 pinion lockers from Aussie, LockRite, D. EzLocker is in the spider pinion. I think some lockers re-use the Toyota one, some supply a new one, but regardless this pinion is what breaks on drop in lockers. HOWEVER, the 4 pinion locker does not suffer from this due to the re-use of the very strong Toyota 4 pinion spider.
