Limping a blown head gasket home

95 Toyota 3.slow 4x4 truck. 3vz

What are some tips for limping my truck home with a blown head Gasket. I had done some roadside stuff but didn't have any nippers to cut the thermostat.

Will it help me limp home to do that?

Also when I let it cool, ( easily cause it's like 20 degrees right now) after starting it and running it a bit the idle speed was really high?

Why did that happen?

Also, wanna loan me a AAA CARD?

The longer you drive it the more damage is done.

If you plan on this engine being scrap it does not matter.

At some point the coolant will get in the oil and take out the bearings till something spins in which case the engine just seizes .

With my luck it would be in the worst possible spot.

Others may have some ideas.

Good luck

How far do you have to limp it?

If you plan on re using that engine, dont limp it and have it towed.

Besides destroying the bearings if coolant gets in the oil, you could also bend a rod if a cylinder gets hydro locked. Best get it towed.

Distance is a big part of this. However, with the cost of rebuilding an engine and the amount of messing around and cost to get everything into OEM spec on a rebuild,...I don't think any of us should consider an engine scrap, ever. With that in mind, I'd do everything possible to tow the thing home without further destroying the engine. Every extra bit of wear you generate on the engine, will cost you in the rebuild. I suppose you might only need to replace the head, but even then, an overheated head will need machining,....it all adds up.

Good luck.

Thanks yall, got her home on a tow, digging in now. Bummer is I just did rebuild like 15k ago, has a couple oil leaks, pretty small band I monitor level daily, ( as good as I can I think my dipstick is short) had heads done real well (481$) for machining and what not.

Do these blocks warp easy?

My compression was low between cyl 2/5 so I think that's where the gasket started to blow.

Also if I just had heads surfaced before last build.
will I need to again, is it just a heat thing?

Motor has a ton of miles (305000) so do the blocks have issues much, or is it usually just the heads.

"Bummer" is an understatement!

Take no offense, I'm just curious; your engine only has 15k miles (since the rebuild), it had a known oil leak, and you kept using a (possibly) faulty dipstick (all while you knew you had said leak)........
