lift
I've got an '86 4x4 pickup and I was wondering if there was a way to get my suspension lifted enough to clear 33's without having to buy an expensive lift kit.

you could check out craigslist or ebay for someone selling a lift kit, or buy a 2" bracket kit or 2-3" body lift from some vendor.
I found a 4" suspension lift on craigslist for 400 bucks a little over a year ago with all the parts I needed.

do you plan on wheeling it? if so those arent your best options...
if you want wheelability you should do some ball joint spacers and lift springs in the rear

33x10.50" tires can be run with some minor trimming/beating of the inner fender. Possibly a 1" body lift to clear.
A wider 33x12.50 will require around 3" of lift to clear, depending on what kind of rim you use. The farther they stick out, the more they will rub.
A good cheap lift combo would be:
1.5" bj spacers up front, will add some lift while driving round the street, will also add about the same in increased travel.
Add-a-leaf (long style) or longer rear shackles for the rear. (Don't forget to make an LSPV lift bracket or you will have bad rear brakes).
And a 2-3" body lift to clear everything.
Beware of alot of the body lift haters on here. I have run mine for over a year and its great! Never have to worry about it All issues were worked out in the first week of having it in the truck.
