Largest tire with IFS

Would a 88 4Runner with the stock IFS and say 5.29 gears be living on borrowed time running 35" tires? Should I stay with a 33x12.5?

Lets just say my frame is complaining about the abuse more than the suspension.

I think it will be alright. I have 33s (for now) on mine with cranked t-bars (nice little angle on the CVs), and a front lockright it's holding up fine. And yes, I do jump it a little bit and bash on it pretty good with the hubs locked. I also run 34x9.50 TSLs off road a lot, but they're much lighter. The TSLs are skinny and on little 15x7s. My 33s are 12.50s on steel 15x10s. I have a 4 inch suspension lift Im going to put on when I get some free time, and I will be putting 35s or 36s on it.

I saw that but it was mostly a rant on body lift versus bracket lift. And go SAS. I would like to hear from people who have run 35's on the IFS. Does it work or just break stuff. I plan to regear the same time and put a locker in the rear. Maybe a limited slip in front.

i knew a guy running 35s on a 87 4runner for a long time.. he was locked up front only.. his truck was great.. and never only broke a odd cv.. nothing more than 32 or 33 locked would... its in the lines you pick and your skinny pedal.. also cheap reman cvs blow before yota ones

In case the implication that I have 35's wasn't recognized, I do, on steel wheels, they come out to about 110 lbs. a piece. I would recommend getting a brace for the rear of the rear of the IFS brackets. Other then that go crazy.

Depends ENTIRELY on how you drive. 35's are the borderline - if you are easy on it, then it will last. If you thrash on it, then no it won't.

Oh, and IMHO, lockers PREVENT more damage than they cause. And the instances when they would CAUSE damage are much more preventable.

My old 91 w/no suspension lift on 35's. Worked fine for medium trails.

I've run 35's with a 3" body lift for a while now. 5.29's are the right gear for that size. I've tried 33s-36s and the 35s are a one of my favorites. If you are careful the IFS will hold up, just use your head. The only front end parts I've ever broken aside from torn boots were the spider gears. I replaced with an aussie locker and so far so good. I'm currently running 34x10.50 tires.

I ran 36x14.50 swamper radials on the front of my truck for a while.

3" body lift, chopped fenders and hammered back cab seam to try and make the room. It hit the fenders when it flexed, but that wasn't veery often in the terrain I run. I just used the tallest tire I could to keep me up high and out of the water.
