knocking bottom end

my son bought a 94 p/u 4x4 22re it was making a noise when he showed it to me i found the num 4 cyl plug threads were striped had compression blow by i ordered a head for it but in the mean time he took it offroad and it got hot and quit i put the new head on and got it started and now it has bad bottom end noise sounds like rod bearings any comments?

Forget to check the oil and coolant?

sounds like a rebuilt is in your hands

yeah he is young he got riped off and im trying to help him out dont want to buy a engine already have a new head guess have to buy rebuild kit mitchelle says 21 hours to rebuild

did he REALLY get it hot and it quit, or did he maybe hydrolock it?

he got it hot barley had any antifreeze when i got it in the shop to put the head on

oooooh...

hmmm....


sounds like maybe he got it hot enough to warp a rod (if even temporarily) enough to kill a rod bearing, thus causing a knock. But of coarse, that's just throwing out a worse-case-scenario guess, lol, but it sounds logical


I think you're best bet MIGHT just be to drop the pan and check for play in the rods, if the sound is really that concerning

well it wouldnt be so concerning if you could hear yourself think over the noise sounds like its going to fly apart i am a ase master tech but havent been into many 22re engines i was just looking for some opinions or some experience with this problem thanks for the info

sounds odd to me...

296k original mile on my 22re before my rebuild, and mine didn't knock at all, and that's with a cracked rod bearing too, lol, and I beat the hell out of it

so I dunno man

thanks i already have a new head so might as well go through te bottom end that way i know it wont lay down on him they a good trucks i had an older one with 20r drove it till frame broke and input shaft broke in trans

You might need a new crank too just for more opinions, i did. $200 w bearings. Id also check the rods for being stretched.
