Knock after rebuild

Knock after rebuild
I just finished rebuilding my 22re engine, I start it up and there's some noise that sounds like its coming from the top of the engine. I replaced everything but the block. everything else is new. It drives fine but has a ticking noise. The only thing I can think of is the valves. But I dont know, any ideas?

Rockers hitting the valve cover is a common issue. If the nuts on top of the rubber grommets are too tight the rockers can make contact with the cover. I presume you used a new valve cover gasket. An old, squished one decreases clearance.
Have you double checked your valve clearances?

Tighten the valve cover nuts just enough so the rubber starts to squish a bit. Don't crank them down hard.
Engnbldr and others recommend going back over the head bolts with a torque wrench in proper tightening sequence after a heating cycle or several to make sure they are all where they are supposed to be. Not that this relates to your problem, but I'd give them a once over before rechecking the valves.
Yep, .008" and .012" is the standard, but adjust them when hot. When warmed up the gaps open slightly, so yours might be loose enough to rattle.
