Try lightly removing it and wiggling it around, mine does it sometimes too and just wiggling it easily sometimes works better than more force

I had that problem it would only sometimes do it then it got to where it wouldnt work at all. I tried new keys and graphite lube and wouldnt work. i had to dake off the dash and replace the whole key cylinder and bracket that holds it to the steering column. Can you get the key to accessory ?

yep. i had a key like that. turn it like normal and if it stops just saw it back and forth slowly. it should catch and you can turn it on. but yes, it's a worn key. if you don't have a good one to copy take out your passenger door handle and have a key made from that lock.

mine was messed up. It had no chance of turning any key. It was a PITA to get the cylinder off of the steering column. Had some kinda bolts without heads from the factory, like it was twisted off on purpose. If he can get it to accessory he can just push the little release button on the bottom of it.

You don't need a key just grab a screw driver and get angry lol. my truck was stolen from the PO that way : (. They broke the plastic around the key cylinder jerks.....

There's an old thread around here that talks about this very issue. I'll see if I can find it tomorrow when I have more time. I had it happen to me once at a gas station maybe four miles from home. I pull everything apart until I figured out to fix it. I just don't remember what I did right now.

you have to move the key around while trying to turn it. i know you tried this already but you need to move the key up and down vertically, parallel to the key itself, and turn.

Easy fix with right tools
96 4- runner 4 cyl.
My key wouldnt turn to the start position, it just stopped no matter how much I wiggled it and made love to it I just ended up with a gigantic blister on my finger. I called a locksmith and after a few quick questions he was taking my dash apart. he made his way to the ignition and used a allen wrench to loosen the set screw that holds a cylinder wich in turn holds the tumblers. After close inspection he determined the lock ring was cracked and there were a few other bits of soft metal in there causing it to jam, I would of needed another anyway. After removing it he drilled out 2 other set screws that hold the tumblers. I told him I didnt mind using my house key to start my car so he removed the tumblers completely. Re-assembled the cylinder minus 1 piece and tumblers and I was good to go. I had to take it apart to put the beauty ring back in and it was very easy to disassemble my dash and have at the ignition. I would rate this quick D.I.Y. at easy to medium difficulty depending if you are using a butter knife or a few tools you could find in your nieghbors garage. I could easily buy a new cylinder and replace myself knowing how easy it was. But I like using a butter knife to start my car.........
