I just bought a new to me 94 toyota pickup with a 22re that has a tick once per revoloution in the top end. Does anyone have any common ideas as to what I can check / it might be?

Valves out of adjustment maybe?

These are generally just noisy motors, most likely it's a combination of the valves and injector noise.

I keep reading thread after thread about noisy 22r/22re's. i haven't heard a noisy one yet. the only noise i hear is the fuel injectors, and i'd call it a happy sewing machine serenede, definitely not -noise-.

mines not an E model, so it's a little quieter. all i can hear are the belts, and the fan.

i'm afraid my flywheels/starter will end up destroyed for all the people that leave it running while erranding and try to restart it. once it ran for 15 hours outside a bank. quiet ? i guess so.

Not to sound like I know it all or anything, I certainly don't, but doesn't it make sense, when one acquires a used vehicle, to replace filters, old vacuum hose, pcv, clean egr, clean or better yet install new plugs, then check/set the valves, and idle, and timing? And change the oil and filter for crisake, give it a little Amsoil to help clean and lube the top end. How common is it that someone does all this when they put their old vehicle up for sale??? Basic tune-up stuff, get this out of the way and then listen to what she sounds like. Just my two freakin cents.

#1 intake valve was really loose. Set valves to factory spec and noise went away.
Thanks to everyone except Nogarage.

Alright, well maybe my valves need to be adjusted, at 111k miles I don't know if it's ever been done.

I know, I know, I've been putting it off, but it runs so well besides a little valve chatter on the occasional dry start.

Hey now, to my credit, I have had the valve cover off and the timing chain and guides look good. This 22re I have now is the most quiet running one yet.

My last 86 had a loose rocker arm and the valves were loud as all hell and I sold it to TXclimber and he drove it for 4 more years and 60K miles like that so I'm not too worried about the one I have now.

Gnarls, if I drive down to AZ and buy you a couple sonoran hot dogs will you help me adjust them?
