just bough a 95 4runner...have some ?

so yesturday i picked up a ridiculously clean 95 4runner 4x4 5spd with 135k on the 22re. i was wondering if you guys could maybe throw some links my way to answer my questions.

how do i figure out what trans and transfer case i have?

are there any "free" mods i can do to wake the 22re up a bit? i know i need new plugs as they are pretty white. i know that means lean, is that really bad or could it be because they are old?

most importantly, when im was cruising around last night in the rain, i had my AC and defroster on as the windows where getting pretty bad and when i wouuld come to stop and the rpm's would drop, everything would die for a moment and come back on. when i would turn the AC off, this didnt happen. is this normal? what does this mean? anything i can do to fix this?

also, where can i get the kit to take away the clunk that happens when you crank the wheel to the left all the way?

thanks for all the help!!!

Cap, rotor, plugs (correct plugs) and wires (all Toyota Genuine Parts) and air filter, fresh oil and then you will have a baseline to see what you are starting with. If the engine oil is really nasty (look for discoloration on the dipstick for clues) then an oil additive and drive a few miles and change the oil again. I also do this with with my radiator every summer. Drain and fill with distilled water and redline water wetter and drive for a month or so before draining and filling with the correct Toyota Factory (red) coolant. Just be sure to pull the top hose off and fill the block passages to prevent air pockets from forming in the system.

what is the bolt pattern for the rims on this truck as well? i am goin to have the charging system checked this week. i just bought some injector cleaner and some new spark plugs tonight. i am planning to go up to the snow this weekend. is there anything i should be aware of while going up or should it be ok?

also i think i found a supercharger(trd) for the 22re. is it true toyota makes one? how well does it work on the 22re?

again, thanks for the help!

To answer your drivetrain questions,
your 4Runner is equipped with the W56 transmission
and RF1A transfer case.

You might wanna spend some time on
http://www.4x4wire.com/
They've got a section dedicated to Toyota 4WD
and it was a big help in gaining a basic knowledge
of these little beasts when I was first getting into them.

As far as engine mods go, nothings free, my friend.
However, a good cat-back, some intake modifications,
and a mild cam if you're feeling adventerous will
get the hamsters running a little stronger, but the fact remains
that, as dependable as the 22RE is, it will never be a powerhouse.

With 135k on the ticker, regular tune-ups and proper maintanece (sp?)
should give your 4Runner a long life without many issues.

thank you that was super helpful!! i will check out 4x4wire for sure. so i think i narrowed down the problem with my truck dieing for a few seconds. when i turn my AC on the lights dim and the engine bogs. why could this be? is my ac compressor going out or is my altinator going out? somethings not right and im trying to narrow it down to what it could be. the battery has a full charge.

Eh, no. 99.9% of 4Runners came equipped with ADD, whether or not it was 4cyl or V6. And since it has ADD, it also has a G58 trans and a Chain drive transfer case.

Your battery should be around 14-16 at full charge, if it reads 12 your alternator is probably struggling. When I turn my fog lights on with the heater my rpms take a dip. I would get a high amp output alt that way later down the road you can run lights and other aux stuff with out draggin the motor down.

For the AC on, engine dying problem, I think the problem is the idle doesn't change. It's suppose to increase the idle when you turn on the AC. As far as solution, I don't know.
maybe TPS?

do i changed the plugs(without gapping) and ran some injector cleaner through it and the problem got worse. i gapped the plugs to .031 and the problem is still there. idels around 250rpm and dies 80% of the time. runs fine once im moving, just wont idel. any idea what else it could be?
