Junkyard A/C upgrade question
I just put ac in over the weekend and everything seems to be good(I'm actually overly excited) The compressor was out of an 88 a little older than my year but when the compressor is off it seems to have a grinding noise not bad kinda like brakes sound after a night of rusting from a rain storm. Seems to be slowly going away but it is still there, is this from sitting and it just needs to work out? Or might I need to get a clutch kit or can I replace the clutch on the compressor? Thanks in advance

The clutches top and bottom can be removed and swapped. In fact you can pull the top clutch part and take a wire brush and clean up the contacting faces. They're probably rusted up. If you do pull the top clutch plate, be very careful. There's a little washer that sits on top of the shaft and it'll fall out. However, it's probably the bearings that are going out in your compressor and you'll need to find a new/different one. Drive it for a while and see if it gets better or worse.

Cool, I am just going to see what it does I bought the kit from the local yard and they will replace if needed. Seems to be getting better, it has only been in for 2 days so time will tell.
It sounds like the clutch, if I press on the front of it while the ac is off and it's running it amplifies it like pressure is pushing it to the weathered clutch if that makes sense.

Well I believe my compressor crapped last night, driving ac off normal noises from the compressor and this awful noise like I broke a belt or belt hit the fan, pulled over and took a look see. Compressor belt intact but loose, staying stationary while the motor is running. But everything else is fine? Was this noise the compressor binding and just seizing up? I did notice that even with the ac off seemed the motor was dragging, what do you guys think I don't get why the belt is loose but not broke? Mayby almost broke the belt but stretched it due to the compressor going south? Anyway time to back to the yard I guess and swap but seems to be a pain to drain and refill just to get another worn compressor. Anyone know if a clone unit from the parts store is good?? Cost???
