Intermitant Knock Sensor Fault 53

Well boys/gals, here we go...

Checked the fault codes today, here goes...

1 pause, 2........2... then pause, 5.........3

The second half of the fault seems to be 53, kock sensor, however when i start the runner up again after clearing the fualt codes, there is no fault. Seems to be recurring when it wants.

So does anyone have any experiance with an intermitant knock sensor signal 53 , and what does this mean for my 22re ???

260,000km sr5 4banger auto. Timing chain, water pump and oil pump changed at 220,000km.

thanks as usual for the help everyone.

I would start by checking the wire to the knock sensor, make sure it has a good connection. After that move to timing

Rgr that... What would you suggest for the timing.... just check that it's bang on?

sorry but your description doesn't make sense to me.

you say "1 pause, 2...."
was the "1" you wrote a flash or just the first pause? You typed 5 numbers and your trouble codes are 2 digit so we should see 6 numbers, or 4

how about saying something like:
"2 flashes, short pause, 2 flashes, long pause, 5 flashes, short pause, 3 flashes, long pause... then the pattern repeats". That would be a code 22 and a 53.

And if you're getting a 22 and a 53, I'd look at the 22 code, coolant temp sensor, before scratching my head over the knock sensor since the coolant temp helps the ECU determine fuel mix and ignition timing and if it's giving incorrect readings could trip the knock sensor if you're getting excessive detonation from a lean mixture.

Coolent temp sensor, and knock sensor are what i interperated as well by the codes. I did however take it to toyota to have the timing checked, and it was off by a few degrees. The runner drives better and has smoother accelleration.

The rad was changed out about a month ago. Where is the coolent temp sensor ??? on the bottom of the engine or rad i'm assuming..... How much does a new one cost, and is it easy to replace, ie, do i have to drain the coolant to replace the sensor ??

I don't want to be wasting fuel that's for sure.

Thanks for the help everyone !
