Hi folks,
#rad4runner had been running very well, especially after I fixed my hard cold starts with rough idle upon starting.
Earlier, when I was having the hard cold start-rough idle issue, undoing the latches on the air-box and lifting the AFM/Lid up did not do anything
However, recently, when I do the same, the engine dies.

A couple of weeks ago, I went off-roading with a group in the desert. I cleaned the air filter as well as I could.

I am not familiar with ECU logic, but I'm suspecting that the ECU had "learned" to compensate for the loaded air filter so when I lift the air-box lid to let it breathe better, the fuel-air mixture all of a sudden gets too thin? I will pick up a new air filter tomorrow and install it.
Do you know if ECU would automatically adjust to the new condition? OR do I need to disconnect battery to let it re-learn operating conditions?

That is strange

It should in theory not happen because opening the cover is up stream of the AFM switch now if it was down stream like in the air intake tube I can see it shutting off the engine

I would hope removing the cover would not be effecting the plug connecting the AFM

You could remove the filter and it should not stall the engine

This ECU is not that advanced just put your new element in and call it good.

Although I am such a Klutz around any thing electrical I remove the battery when I check the oil just to be safe

i wonder if the accordian elbow(s) have a crack, and lifting the airbox cover allows unmetered air into the system?

Been so long since i drove a 2.4 I need to go look at one in the shop

After looking I have to think doing something to the afm connection or wires

The other would be unmetered Air from either a crack or a loose clamp

Another disadvantage of having the intake duct cross over the radiator/hose.

It's not bad when in normal position, I could not find replacement at pick a part, and the 86 will get her kicks on Route 66 tomorrow, so I sealed with two layers of 10-mil pipe cover tape.



Will order replacement online and have it shipped to my brod's in TX.
If anyone is near the I-40 /Rte66 between So Cal and Amarillo, pls let me know if we can have a little coffee.
Would also appreciate recommended mechs shop along the way, in case I'd need it.

When mine cracked I taped it as well. Ran the tape for almost a year before replacing it. I bought the Dorman part last year and it fit just like original.

one way to avoid stressing the accordian when opening the box to change/clean the filter is to loosen the hose clamp at the plenum first, then unsnap the box and lift.

I'm not in Albuquerque any more, so I can't have coffee with you. But I can offer up some recommendations on food stops along the old 66 corridor in NM:

- The 66 Pit Stop - Home of the Laguna Burger - West of Albuquerque, on a section of old 66 with a cool bridge.
- El Charritos Mexican Restaurant - 47th and Central in Albuquerque. Great New Mexican food. Probably the best Carne Adovada I've had.
- Monte Carlo Liquors and Steak House - Central just east of Atrisco, Albuquerque. Burgers and fresh cut fries - yum. Cool old place. A locals' hangout.
- Java Joe's - 906 Park Ave SW, Albuquerque, just off Central. Coffee and good baked goods. It's on the Breaking Bad list of locations.
- Del's Restaurant & Gifts - On the old 66 strip in Tucumcari. Can't go wrong with a breakfast or lunch at Del's.

Made it to Plano, TX today on the tape remedy. I think I;m just gonna run with that, because I plan to do the intake/battery swap to help clean up the engine compartment: I like less stuff, and besides I do not like the intake hose and radiator inlet hose rubbing against and hurting each other.

Unfortunately, I passed Albuquerque late and I wanted to tackle the dirt section between Santa Rosa and Cuervo, then between San Jon and Glenrio, NM, so I just drove through then camped at travel center in Santa Rosa.

it looks like you still have the early plenum? i would swap to the later straight plenum & tb, and get the correct intake hose for that system: http://siestaoffroad.com/tbody.html

the intake hose costs almost $20 more, but it doesn't have that radical bend in it, and the cold start system is much better.

Thanks, OSV. Nice mod, but I'm thinking of doing intake-batt swap first, because that would clean up my engine compartment and have minimal cost.
Also having my transmission worked on in Dallas for what sounds like intake shaft bearing issue, TX so budget and time would be tight right now. Yes, the Yota made it all the way to Dallas and I could have driven her all the way to Houston, then Galveston (for a coast-to coast road trip), but I wanted to play it safe so I needed to leave her in the shop.

We originally took her to Plano Transmission, shop with great reviews on Yelp, but shop is full and I wanna get her done within next week for the drive back to So Cal. Shop owner sent us to another shop that he contracts manual transmission out to...

On our 45-minute drive down to south Dalllas, tranny noise did not manifest it self... pretty intermittent, and I'm still getting my 19-MPG's.

I would love to say they wouldn't notice but they will, they know All.

The intake pipe across the engine bay against the radiator is the replacement design for the preheat chambers they patented for the early models. I want to say 18r had them. So I'll be interested in that answer also.
