Instrument Cluster swap

Hi guys,

Recently picked up an 89 4x4 pickup, I believe its a DLX model (but i'm not positive). 3.0l auto extended cab with nice winch and custom front bumper. Picked it up for $700 because the guy said the tranny went out. Long story short, the tranny linkage was out of adjustment and I got a steal.

Been slowly but surely fixing all the little things that get neglected over the years. Fixed a couple of small oil leaks, replaced heater core and radiator, and figured out why the 4x4 shifter wasnt engaging fully, new wheels and mud tires. Now I need some technical help.

The instrument cluster in my truck has a faulty speedometer. It works ok on the freeway, but in town its nowhere even close (says your doing 25 when you know your doing at least 40). You can see where someone has broken into it in the past and replaced the speedometer needle. I want to replace the cluster, but I want to add an in-dash tach while I'm at it.

I found a tach cluster on CL, guy said it was out of a 90 SR5 4-runner. I didnt know any better and bought it. Of course, it didnt fit. At least it only cost me $40.

I'm sure its been covered here before but I couldnt find it (probably was searching with the wrong terms). Can someone help an new guy out with info on swapping a non tach cluster with a tach cluster for an 89 4x4 pickup DLX? Any ideas on where to find a reasonably priced cluster would be helpful too.

And yes, if anyone wants a good deal on the cluster I bought just say the word.

Things to know:
-SR5 cluster swap requires an oil pressure sender change, your current one will damage the cluster
-To make life easy, you should match a V6 cluster to a V6 engine, or 4cyl to 4cyl, otherwise the tach will read wrong. You can open the cluster and change the setting.
-Modifications may or may not be necessary to get the tach to read, when I did it in my 90 it was plug and play
-There are cable driven clusters and electronic clusters, I believe 89-91 are cable, and 92-95 are electronic. You must get the same as your vehicle has, ie 89-91 cluster in your case.

Thank you for that link, that helps.

Yes, my cluster is cable driven. The cluster I bought is also cable driven, but wouldnt bolt in as the screw pattern was different.

Yeah, that guy BS'd you...that isn't a 90' 4runner cluster. Here's a couple of pics....

The one he sold you looks like a 1996 cluster....see this ebay pic/link

Didnt notice this before, but on the bottom of the tach is printed:

94 95 96 97

Further searching found this:

Looks like I have a V6 SR5 Tacoma cluster.

cool deal. Post it up in the taco forum to get a confirmation of what you have, maybe someone will even want to buy it from you and you can then get the right one.
