Installing a 87' 22re in a 94 pickup ??'s
I traded a motorcycle for a 1994 4x4 pickup with a 22re. The odometer on the truck said 264,000. I no sooner than got the truck home and realized it needed a timing chain. Previous owner swore the truck had an engine from an RV and only 130,000 miles on it. I installed a timing set,new oil pump and water pump from engnbldr. Ive put 4,000 miles on the truck since. I recently installed flamethrower injectors too. Anywho I was absolutely raping the poor girl the other day. I was pulling my buddies UTV out from 2 ft of snow. While doing so the engine developed one hell of a knock. A friend of mine that that drag races and puts engines together says it sounds like I broke a wristpin. I found a 1987 22re with 75,000 miles for $500. I figure this route is cheaper/faster than rebuilding mine. What do I have to do to make a 1987 22re work in a 1994? Research tells me the fuel/electrical systems are different. I'm not sure I can acquire the 87 ECU. Also should I swap the new timing set from my 94 to the 87? The 87 engine was pulled from an RV.

I'm assuming it's the 22RE '87. I think there was a few that we 22R. But even if it is engine, head, valve cover, oil pan. The lower intake plenums are the same for older and newer 22RE. compare sensors and use ones off your engine. Shouldn't need new ECU. Don't know if manifold is different. Your motor should have a wide band O2 where 87 has narrow.
Take time and compare parts.

I did the opposite and swapped a engine from a 94' into my 87'. Just strip the 87 down to a long block and bolt your 94' accessories and intake manifold onto the 87'.

Thanks for the reassurance! I jus got home with the new engine. The only other issue I have is the 87 came out of a truck with auto trans. My truck is standard. I am told I will have to install a pilot bearing?

I'm pretty sure they're all the same. http://www.lceperformance.com/Pilot-...-p/1054003.htm says they are.
