ifs steering box
Has anyone had any luck with a steering box from a junkyard? Its about 50 bucks at the junkyard, I assume, or 50 for a gasket set but my steering box is pretty worn out. I would like to buy the one rebuilt box from Marlin Crawler but 300 dollars on a steering box is not in the budget. The main reason why I changing it is because its pissing fluid over half of my suspension. Iv'e tried a couple bottles of the lucas steering stop leak in it, and I could of bought a box by now with all the money in fluid. Any suggestions?

Hey a Titusvillian! 
I just moved out of Titusville about 5 or 6 months ago
I pulled a steering gearbox out of a 4Runner at the junk yard down on 50, pass 95 heading west on the left hand side (can't remember the name of that place
) I think the 4Runner had like 140k on it or something like that. Cleaned it up, painted it so it looked new, and slapped it on my Pickup, and solved my leaking problem, lol
I paid $60 for mine, so if that one's around the same milage or less, and doesn't show obvious signs of leakage, then I'd say that's a pretty good deal

Just make sure you look closely at it before buying it. I do know that the parts truck I bought has a slightly different box than my truck. My truck is a '90 with a 4 cyl., and the donor truck is a '91 and had a V6. (Both of them are 2WD)
I'm guessing that the spare I have wouldn't work for your truck, since your's is 4WD, but I'm not sure. If it would work, and the shipping wouldn't be so outrageous, I would sell it really cheap. It had 141,425 miles on it, and wasn't ever wheeled (obviously). Judging by the condition of the frame, it never saw an un-paved road. PM me if you're interested. I can send you pictures.

I just did crossover on my truck using an ifs box straight from the junkyard no problems whatsoever. obviously look at it first before you go through the effort of taking it off of the donor vehicle. you can also try craigslist.com if your familiar with that.

just got rid of it a little over a month ago
so she's still driving around there huh? the guy that bought it lives in Melbourne

Yeah I used to see that truck around town. Not anymore. Titusville small enough that you pretty much drive by everyone soon or later. Thats a nice truck. I'm sure she was pretty hard to let go.

Rebuild for like 120. I got the rebuild kit from Autozone, it was really simple to rebuild, not as hard as everyone says it is. I found a few good write ups, followed them along with the FSM.

Well mine past the point of rebuilding I think. If anyone has a good steering box for sale thats for a 86-88 4x4 I'll buy it. I think 50 bucks is fair or tell me what you want for it.

well I don't necessarily want to go through the work to convert to the newer style. There aren't any local 86-88 gear boxes. Everyone takes them once they get in the salvage yard. So come on yotatech hook me up! I might be able to get a junkyard to ship it to me. mabye.... I'll have to give the yotayard a call.

My steering has a lot of play in it. If i cant find anything under a hundred. I might just rebuild it just so I don't have to fill the fluid every other day. Next time no power steering fluid thats for sure.
