Crap. Looks like I got a burned #1 exhaust valve.(3vze) On pulling the valve covers, All the valves on the drivers side are in spec with one on the edge of too tight. The valves on the passenger side, extremely tight. Looks like when I did the HG 100k ago and had the dealer do the valves, they skipped the hard to get at ones. Over the miles, the valves just got tighter.
Looks like to get the #1 exhaust valve back into spec, I will need a 0.5mm shorter shim. I can't see that being a good thing, but I am dropping in a 2.5mm shim and hoping for the best.
Moral of the story. Trust but verify.
Now, to fix the head on an engine with over 400k, or buy a rebuilt one off ebay for 1.5k. Choices, choices.

I just finished re-shimming mine tonight. The head was rebuilt about 12000kms ago and 3 of the valves tightened right up. I think it has to do with the new valve seats setting deeper into the head from the heat and constant pounding. She runs beautifully now.
