Idle surging, temperature gauge higher than normal.

Hi I'm new here! I own a 91 pickup(rwd) with the 22re that just hit 170k miles today.Yesterday I noticed my idle was surging whenever I was in neutral or when I put the clutch down. It did this for a while until I hit an open patch of freeway and started getting going, and when I got off it sounded just fine. The other thing I noticed is that my temperature gauge which normally sits happily around 1/4 was now at 1/2 edging its way toward 3/4, I think it eventually ended up there and thankfully I got home before it really overheated. I've seen people talking about vacuum leaks on here, but would that cause the temperature to go up like that? Also where are some of the most common vacuum leaks?

Have you looked to see if your coolant is full to the top??

Gotta look inside your cold radiator, not just in the overflow vessel.
