idle just keeps surging!!!

I changed my coolant and now (I am assuming from the change) my idle is going crazy! It will idle sometimes at 1000rpm when I start it warm...then jumps up to 1500-1700 and if I even touch the brake at the slightest then it will start surging. I have the idle as low as it will go...and I used to make it idle at 500 if I wanted to. It idles at 2300 cold...which might as well be drinking gas. This is really pissing my off. What should I do? Thanks!

thermostat was just changed. O.K, so when you mean fill it all the way up you mean to take the cap off and start it....then wait til the thermostat opens then fill it the rest of the way up and I should be set? Does this sound like the problem like the one over on TN?

on my '85 EFI I ended up cleaning my Air Auxilliary valve because it was clogged.. i was having all kinds of idle problems.. 4-wheeling was miserable because i couldn't keep a normal idle to hit the big hills..

Yeah! I don't know the name of the hose, or valve. But there's a rubber hose at th front of the intake, just under the throttle body that can clog up. Just take the front hose off, and the back, and blast some air thru it and it should un-clogg. If that don't work,.....google it.... 22RE idle surging/problems. Everyone has had this problem. Have fun figuring out what your prob is. It could even be a brake wire you gotta cut. OYE!!!!!

thanks. I did the trick and a bunch of antifreeze came out but it only went down like maybe a quarter of an inch? Does this mean my thermostat is not circulating? I let it idle forever. It was hot. And I let it sit there for 15 minutes after it was all warm. I have the idle ALL the way down and it still surges. Should I clean that damn line? I took that off a bunch of times...I did my head gasket/valve job so I played with it a bunch...lol

Crap man...... Like I said, Google it. You'd be suprised how many people have had this same prob and have never figured it out. Other than it being annoying, it will still keep running fine as long as it's not getting hot. Then you may have a prob like me... I had exhaust fumes coming thru the radiator, which means a cracked head in the combustion chamber. Or it could be your cold idle valve thing under your throttle body. Google it. Trust me. you'll learn what may be wrong.

does it change if you arent on the brake pedal? mine bogs sometimes because the brake booster has a vaccum leak. only does it once in a while.

I had the same problem. I had the idle turned waaaayyyy down and it would surge like crazy when I was on the brake. It was the "cold air idle up valve" or whatever the hell it's called. It was clogged up. This valve tries to bump up the idle speed when the engine/air is cold. Then there's a vacuum switched connected to the brake booster that cuts fuel when you brake. It does that to drop your RPMs and save fuel. The two systems working against each other cause you idle to go crazy. Check that valve and you should be set.

You have to burp the system, I think there is an air bubble somewhere where the coolant goes through the throttle body. The bubble won't allow the idle air control valve (or what ever its called) to close as far as I understand. If you take the TB apart its pretty self explanatory in congunction with the FSM online. I had it happen in mine, though my main problem was my idle was too high aand there was a bubble.

don't forget, take your Throttle Position Sensor off and clean.. Also clean all of the holes around the throttle body.. I also found a bit of carbon on the plate inside of the throttle body not closing all the way.. Also go to 4Crawler's site and he explains how to adjust your TPS.. www.4crawler.com its somewhere between the Air Auxilliary Valve and TPS causing the problem.. The brakes surge because your idle is too high and the computer pulls back.. A properly adjusted TPS and working AAV will stop this..

I'm having the exact same problem with my 94 22re, i have replaced the mass air flow sensor, idle air control valve ,adjusted tps and spent $300 in diagnostic charges at the local dealer (never again). I might try to replace the thermostat next and see if that helps. at least its not another $100 part.

yeah. Tonight I was driving normal. I look at my god damn temp and it was almost to the red. So I figured what the hell. And started flooring it. I then pulled over and as soon as I did it cooled down really fast. I bought a god damn $9 heavy duty thermostat and this is what I get. I guess I'll have to replace it AGAIN. My idle now surges all the time...and drops in rpms and still surges when the brake is pressed. I'm seriously considering getting rid of this piece of and dumping Toyota all together. So far there reliability has been piss poor to me. I might as well go buy a Ford Ranger.

So...I CAN'T get the assembly (where the hose attaches to on the bottom) off...because dumb ass toyota decided to put screws in. And guess what...there ALL stripped out now. Thank you TOYOTA!!!
