I need some advice on an '86 custom cab
I am now a proud owner of a 1986 Custom Cab. It has extremely low miles but the engine block is missing due to it "throwing a rod." I have the turbo unit and everything to reassemble it just no block. I have never had a turbo, and don't know much about them in Toyotas.
Is there any difference in the standard 1985 and up 22r block and a turbo 22r?
I do not plan on doing much if any modifications to the truck, just looking for a dependable truck.
Any advice would be great!

The 22RTE Turbo engine was based on the later model 22RE (short block /tall head). This is a similar but entirely different block and head. The block was drilled with different oil passages to accommodate the Turbo oil requirements. The cylinder head's combustion chamber had a different shape. The piston was dished. Advertised horsepower was 145. The factory set the boost at 5.5-6 pounds, but completely stock internals survived boosts of up to 17-22 pounds, with proper fuel injection modifications. http://www.toysport.com/technical%20...tech_notes.htm

I am thinking about just making this truck a standard 22RE and not using the turbo unit. any problems with this idea??
I have the turbo, head, and what I belive is all of the pipes/manifolds.
I'm not that sure about the turbos. I would hate to get this all together and the turbo go out. I have had lots of luck with 22-REs in the past.........

The 22r-te engine is low compression, so without the turbo, it will suck. if you dont want the turbo, you're probably better off selling that engine and buying a 22re long block

If it were me, I'd probably put together a turbo block, or build an RE block to handle the turbo. Not too much trouble- just a set of lower compression pistons.
Otherwise, putting an RE in may not work too well with the turbo's ECU.

well if you want any kind of power in that thing WITHOUT the turbo..then you need atleast 22RE pistons...not the 22RE-T pistons because they have a lower compression thus resulting in less horsepower..
and you cant just use any 22RE block to work with the turbo..it HAS to be a turbo block..or what Toyota calls the "Lazer Block"..its basically the same but on the driverside of the block there is a cut out for oil for the turbo..without that i believe it would be quite a task making the turbo work right..lol
if it were me i would find a good used Lazer block..(with pistons and crank and all that)..i believe it would be easier..and then you wouldnt have to deal with the big A$$ hassle of changing wiring harnesses, ECU's..and all that other junk..
and since you dont know much about turbo's...you would DEFINATELY want to get a Lazer Block if you keep the turbo..that way you dont have to figure out how to adequily(spelling??) oil the turbo..

5spd should bolt up no probs, efi wiring harness and ecu, and all the efi stuff, i dont think ur head will work on a 22-re, so ull need an entire 22-RE, good luck

I have been thinking of just putting in a 22r with aftermarket carb. I won't have to worry about the computer or harness will I????
What to do about the fuel pump?
Also kicking around the chevy 4.3. From what I can tell it will take about $2,000 in adapters and parts to make that work plus the motor and carb.

Yeah, I am at a loss......
I did find am 87 4runner that runs good that I can use for parts to switch everything over. I am going to look at it over the weekend. I sounds "too good to be true."
I'm not looking for a trail buggy or a mud slinger. Just something different. I have only seen 2 of these Custom cabs. This thing has only 45,000 on the odometer!!!! My goal now is to get it running and start the wish list!!
4" lift, 35's, 488(?) gears are in my thoughts.

Yep, too good to be true,
"runs good, motor only has 5,000 miles on it" means it cranks up, smokes, covered in oil, and mabey only has 50 miles LEFT!
"body is a little rough" means you can push your finger through the rust!

Going to look at a complete 22r, carb to oilpan for $200. Not sure if it is an early 22r.
If it is an 85+ I will get it. I figure I can rebuild it and use the carb set up and move over to EFI when I locate the parts.
Sure are hard to find one in all together!

I just saw a custom cab turbo driving on the freeway today. I never knew that the custom can was offered as a turbo. It had the red turbo decal on the tailgate & the EFI turbo badge behind the door. It was beat looking but still pretty cool.
