I need more power from my 3.slow v6
Hey ya'll. I got a 92 4runner with the 3.0 v6 and was wondering what could be done on a limited budget to try and get a lil mo power. I am already prepared to swap the clutch fan for a sparky to just get that extra 1/4 horse...lol...actually I hear that a clutch fan can draw as much as 8-12 hp at certain times. anyways...ecu chips? anyone? I keep seeing these claims about chips you can plug into your ecu or obd and get torque and hp. Is it true I can plug in an extra 20hp or better?...How difficult would it be to plumb in a t3-4 turbo to the 3.0? plain and simple. I'm broke and I need MORE POWER! anyone?...tricks?...thanks...Blake

good luck...
"chips" will make your motor self destruct... unless they are sour cream and onion...
you dont have OBD I or II... get a paper clip instead...
search the forums... there are several threads dedicated to building up 3.0's, but unfortunately, you will spend more money and get less fuel mileage than just doing a motor swap...
welcome to Yotatech!

I wish there were some simpler options, like back when. I know that the program chip my buddy put in his s-10 seemed to make a pretty significant differance. I dont want to go through with a gear swap for the simple reason that with the gearing I have I am already pulling 3000rpm at 70. at 85 almost 4 so I dont think taller gears would be the answer there. but I would like to think about it. Engine swap is too expensive. I have searched through alot of areas looking for stuff. I've heard of gm 4.3 swap, gm 3.8 swap, gm sm. block swap, but leats be realistic I just got this yota in december. It's a 92 with 190k on it. I bought it from the second owner and its immaculate. pristine in and out, yes pristine , like new inside and out, for $3000. I personally think thats a smokin deal for a 92 yota 4rnr 4x4 like this. Of course then again I could end up swapping and having a REALLY nice runnin runner for less than probably 5k in all.....thoughts???

the 3.0 was never meant to be any more than a 'badge' Toyota could put on the front and back of their trucks so they could say they had a V6 like everyone else. It was a very modest increase in power over the 22R/E. Getting any significant power from it requires significant investment... so the rumor goes. Considering the market for 3VZE performance parts is vastly smaller than that of the 22R/E, there may be some truth to the rumor.

Yeah, getting power from a 3vze is not easy. You can, but its not cheap.
Do the ISR mod, it costs less than $30
Do a FULL tune up (NGK or DENSO parts)
Swap in some better gears (make sure your gear/tire size ratio is stock or better)
There are a few "chips" floating around on e-bay for our trucks. They will richen the mixture, advance the timing (baisicly a $0.05 resister). Thats it. You could do the same thing yourself (Don't...) for free.
There have been guys who have thrown turbos on the 3vze. But the bottom end is just not strong enough in stock form. Don't waste the time...
Gear it down, the 3vze likes to rev And why so fast? I never really go faster then 70-75mph..

Depening on the cam, they can help alot.
You need to do mods that work with eachother. Like an ISR mod will help the engine intake air easier, cams will let more air into the combustion chambers, and a bigger exhaust will let everything get out faster.
I noticed a big result from my cams But the price reflects it. It keeps up with traffic easily, but I wouldnt put much more $$ into it...

I probably will end up getting a K&N Cold air intake and Flowmaster exhaust and maybe gutted cats..
I think that will give enough hp for what I need it for which is daily driving on twisting and hilly roads.
Also you could get Downey headers and a JET chip.
I dont do chips so that wouldn't be an option for me because I just don't trust them.
Intake and exhaust would help a lot.
