I messed up my 4runner! Air Flow Meter Problem
95 4Runner 4X4 V6
About a week ago, i noticed she was running a little rough at idle, and my check engine light was on. Browsing through forums, i came across cleaning the maf sensor. So i went to what i thought was the maf to later find out i dont have one, and that i have a afm. I disconnected - battery, then the connection at the afm. I then unscrewed the 2 screws here...big mistake
Slightly pulled on it, and this aint right. So i connected everything back together. Tried starting her, and she went crazy. Idling mad, dash lights came on, black smoke out the exhaust tip, then eventually cut off. Took a razor blade and took off the top plate to take a look inside. I did not pull anything apart. Put the top back together and got the same thing.
I took a look at the connection and seen a piece had broken off, so i then had a loose connection. After numerous junk yards, found the connection piece and spliced it to connect to the afm, with the metal clip to hold it, Started her up and got the same thing, but not as bad. I then went to play with the connection a little bit while she was running. I noticed when i slightly lifted the connection, she was smooth, and the black smoke turned to white (she sat for 10 days). When i let go of the connection, she started going crazy again, back and fourth.
So i rigged a metal plate underneath the connection and zip tied it to keep it in place. She now idles good with check engine light on. Went to apply the gas, and white smoke. Im gonna try and drive her tomorrow to auto zone and have some codes pulled. Somewhere i seen on a forum, i can pull the codes myself? If someone has a link, that would be great. I dont know how safe it is to drive her .with this ghetto rig i did. There is no reason i should have to do this, but something is wrong. Everything is lined up, ok and connection is held together tight. What i should of done was leave it alone, and i would of never had this problem

X2, been there done that. Why did Toyota engineers put those screws there?????? There is no reason to ever take those screws out. Edited: I didn't read it though good before I posted.

I did the same damn thing a few months back. Just kept cranking and wouldn't start. Popped the cover off, small screwdriver in hand and get everything back to spec in 10 minutes, made it on time to my date too!
Do us a favor, put your camera in macro, and take a picture of the sensor with the black cover off.
As for the codes, there should be a DIAG. or DIAGNOSTICS connection on the left side of the engine. Using a paperclip short two terminals (brain fart)

Thank you for the picture i am confident i can solder the 3 connectors back to the circuit board. i plan on after the rebuild trying it before i seal the top back on. Any recommendations on what silicone to use.

was not intending to mess with part at all was removing everything from engine bay to rebuild engine due to coolant in number 5 spark plug hole. a new pressure plate for the clutch. the connector to the afm was a brain fart. Have done multiple head gaskets, motor swaps first time ruining an electrical component
