I got stuck in the ditch.

I got stuck in the ditch.
I went out in the snow for fun, not realizing a layer of ice was under the snow. I was rounding a corner when all traction broke loose and I started going straight into the ditch. I'm lucky not to have flipped the truck or hit a tree, but I was inside of a four foot steep bank between me and the road. I had trees on one side just inches away and one one front of me. I was able to move between the trees to a level spot where I tried a few attempts to get out without enough room to get speed, I was stuck. I ended up calling my brother with his new Silverado, he was able to keep my truck from nosing down and keep me straight while I four-lowed myself out.
After that I saw a f-250 off the road on my way home, I was following my brother who stopped to see if he was ok. After I stopped my truck started going backwards down the hill. I had to back all the way down the hill to be able to get a better start up the hill again. I don't think it was worth the outing today, but I least my truck is fine and I'm a little more wiser from it. It's a good thing I driving slow to take the turn, I'm positive I would have put the truck on its side, instead just a few added minor scratches. I have to say that my heart sunk deep when I knew there was nothing I could do but ride it out.

I was following my brother who stopped for the f250 who ran off the road too. He stopped at the top of hill while was still climbing. I didn't have traction to restart on ice uphill. It was bad, many wrecks just in the few back roads I was on. I only drive on untreated roads because of salt.

Are you a new driver or do you live somewhere that usually doesn't get snow? Never stop on a hill if you can help it. I was taught in emergency vehicle training that when you start to skid, steer toward the skid rather than jerk the wheel in the opposite direction, which is a natural instinct. It works well in older vehicles that don't have ABS. You already noticed that turning while in 4WD is completely different and you can only take wide turns.
I took my son out last winter in the 2000 4Runner to skid and slid in a parking lot and the ABS wouldn't allow it. I can't wait to play this year in the '89.
I'm glad your 4Runner is okay. You guys can keep the snow.

Yes. Ice. Nothing helps except ice skates. I can't wait.
