I bought an 87 22R 4WD. What next?
Hey guys,
I apologize beforehand if my question has been answered a million times elsewhere. I did use the search function and browsed the board for a couple of days before deciding to post. Basically, I just bought an 87 pickup, 22R, 4WD. For now, I only expect it to be for hauling things, trash, etc. Eventually I'll build it up for play. It has 198,000 miles, and runs great. The previous owner seems to have been straight with me on all accounts. Its blowing a very small amount of oil on the topside. I cleaned off the engine, and haven't noticed any new oil accumulation since I bought it a week ago. He said he loses about a quart every thousand miles. He also didn't know if the timing belt, or head gasket had been changed. He did say he put on a new carb 2 years ago, and it fires up with one pedal pump every time. My question is simply, what do I need to look out for, or do immediately. What are good general maintenance tips for an unknown 22r? I'm super excited to be part of what seems to be an awesome family.

Don't worry about a thing and run her as is for the next 20+ years! hahaha
Go to google and search for something along the lines of "22r, maintenance" that should put ya on the right track
Also...They have a timing chain not a timimg belt

Oh yeah DURP! knew it was a timing chain, thanks for reminding me! Is slinging a little oil pretty common once the valve seals start to wear? Should I run 20w-50? I'll hit up the mighty google right now!

oh yeah, mines a 5spd too (really squeaky clutch pedal if anyone has specific lubrication tips)

Just run her till you can't!!!
Keep an eye on the water pump and such, that'll need changed before too long if it hasn't been already. If the Valve stem seals are leaking you'd never be able to tell from looking at the motor. it's probably the valve cover leaking a bit.
20-50 for the summer won't hurt then run 10-30 in winter. That's what I usually do with older cars. I'm running 10-30 right now in the 22re and my 3.0 I'm running straight 30, next change will be the 20-50.
Check for grease fitting in the front and on both d-shafts and get them good. Check the oil in both diff's (I like the Lucas oil for this). Plugs, wires, cap, rotor...just some other ideas.

Well, depends how soon you want to start wrenching on it.
If it was me, I would do a valve adjustment and take a gander at your timing chain guides while you've got the valve cover off, make sure they aren't broken. Mine were busted on my '90 when I bought it with 198k on it. You can also do a valve cover gasket at the same time, runs about $20.
If the chain guides are busted, or if the chain is rattly at low RPM, might be time to do a timing chain.
Valve stem seals aren't all that bad to do, though it's a bit more tricky if you leave the head on and there's some chance you could pop the head gasket if you're not careful. Here's how I got around this.

Congrats man, I bought my 22r 4wd truck 3 years ago. Knowing NOthing about cars.
I was so afraid of buying a 20 years old truck...also an Imported one in my country...
But, let me tell you... it was love at first sight...she has those tall legs... and she was so rust free...And her style...

SO HAPPY and proud that I bought her...
-Almost every year I have to spend some good money on her, in order to keep it up...Worth every cent spend on her...Wish I can spend more. See, I'm in Love...!!!
Take care at the lubrication points. Get inside her and pull every thing you can, to see if she is tight enough...
Air filter, spark plugs, cables, rust spots, manual hubs, motor oil, tranny oil... just the regular things. And spend some money werever you think it needs.
